Speaking of ignorant or disingenuous - is it a stretch of your imagaination to believe that a US citizen of Hispanic descent might want his rights, too? You know the one, the one that entitles you (and he) to walk down the street without worrying that either one of you is going to be stopped and asked to prove who we are and where we came from? Would that not be a right that a citizen might want?

For that matter, think about it in reverse. What "right" would an illegal be wanting? They don't have any, remember? Why would an illegal be carrying a sign which says "I want my rights" when he knows damn well the only thing he has a "right" to is deportation?

I'm pretty sure this law would apply to oh say Eastern Europeans too.

If it helps clarify anything, Flex, the local Hispanics in a near-by Va. town are meeting and organizing because, as Lana says:

I want these local Meetups because I am a legal immigrant and I want my rights to be protected

What the heck does that even mean?

Everyone protesting the Arizona decision is basically a supporter of general amnesty (EDIT: and against the current federal law). They just don't want to come out and say that because it's not politically acceptable to do so.

I take it to mean that hispanics who are here legally or who are natural born citizens are afraid that they are going to be stopped every time they turn around and asked to prove their citizenship. They have a right not to have that happen.

What right do you think they're talking about?

Yeah, cops never overstep their authority, especially with regard to minorities. How can anybody imagine such a thing?!

And if they do, they get prosecuted. Are you now demeaning our police officers as racists just waiting for opportunity?

All police officers? No. Never said that.

Some cops? Absolutely.

Many others may not be racist and are just authoritarian pricks.

Others are both.

And then plenty are decent folks just trying to do a good job and help people.
