I think the relevant question would be "Why would we WANT Puerto Rico to become a state?" I know I don't want that to happen. Based upon their levels of poverty, they would prolly receive more money than they'd contribute in taxes.

That's all we need is another welfare state.

NO THANKS!

We already do contribute mightily to their health and welfare, as most programs available here are available there.. including welfare, food stamps and the like..

Some pay into social security and some do not.. it is a confusing, hybrid system.

I dunno Darryl...it just seems to me that making this country any larger and more populated isn't a good idea. First Puerto Rico, then the Dominican Republic, St Thomas, etc.?

No thank you!!

Not advocating either for against, Dominican Republic is not a US Territory.. Virgin islands, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and Samoa are...

As said before, we are already contributing mightily.. that was your original contention as you did not want to add another welfar state...

Territories of the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
An incorporated territory of the United States is a specific area under the jurisdiction of the United States, over which the United States Congress has determined that the United States Constitution is to be applied to the territory's local government and inhabitants in its entirety (e.g., citizenship, trial by jury), in the same manner as it applies to the local governments and residents of the U.S. states. Incorporated territories are considered an integral part of the United States, as opposed to being merely possessions.[1]

All territory under the control of the federal government is considered part of the "United States" for purposes of law.[2] From 1901 - 1905, the U.S. Supreme Court in a series of opinions known as the Insular Cases held that the Constitution extended ex proprio vigore to the territories. However, the Court in these cases also established the doctrine of territorial incorporation. Under the same, the Constitution only applied fully in incorporated territories such as Alaska and Hawaii, whereas it only applied partially in the new unincorporated territories of Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines.[3][4]

I prefer that we declare Puerto Rico NOT a US territory! Honestly! I'd love to see congress mandate that all US territories are now independent and on their own.

Why not?

If you have to ask that question you will never understand..

First of all, we keep these territories for a presence in specific areas of the world.. didja ever think about defense????...

The second thing that comes to mind, is if we leave and withdraw all our aid, our imperialistic paternalism would invite another power to step in.. Venezuala for example, that would not sit well with the American People..

Sure there are many more reasons, but if it sounds too good to be true it usually is..

I understand as well as you do Darryl. I actually thought you'd like the idea.

What does PR have to do with AZ? Aren't those Mexicans in AZ threatening our lives? I think I see your point, but it's not very good practice.

Try calling the next PR you see a "Mexican" and if I were you, I'd watch out for the right cross. There is very little that would insult a PR more than calling him a Mexican, Salvadoran, Columbian...ANYTHING. In fact, one of my neighbors, who is a PR, gets pissed if anyone calls him anything other than an American. He says it's hard enough being a Yankee fan around here married to a Red Sox fan from Vermont. And he doen't get why anyone who is an American would show a flag of another country. We went to Texas Roadhouse one night and he almost lost it when he saw the "foreign" Texas flag.

Agreed about Beck. He's nuts.
