Default Peru Glacier Breaks Away Causing Tsunami on Lake

FOXNews.com - Massive Glacier Triggers 'Tsunami' in Lake

A huge glacier has broken off and plunged into a lake in Peru sparking a 23-meter high tsunami wave that destroyed a nearby town.

...A 2009 World Bank report warned Andean glaciers and the region's permanently snow-covered peaks could disappear in 20 years if no measures are taken to tackle climate change.

...In 1970, an earthquake triggered an avalanche of ice, rock and mud on the mountain of Huascaran that buried the town of Yungay, killing more than 20,000 people.

That's 20,000 people! Does anyone even remember that happening? I heard about it in college.

Side note...source is FOX News so it must be true.

"About 99 percent of the Chacaltaya glacier in Bolivia has disappeared since 1940, says World Bank engineer Walter Vergara, in his new report, "The Impacts of Climate Change in Latin America."

One of the highest glaciers in South America, Chacaltaya is one of the first glaciers to melt due to climate change. Although the glacier is over 18,000 years old, it is expected to vanish this year.

"The greenhouse gases are the main driver," says Vergara. "The scientific community has a consensus - this is manmade."

Since 1970, glaciers in the Andes have lost 20 percent of their volume, according to a report by Peru's National Meteorology and Hydrology Service."

Melting Andean Glaciers Could Leave 30 Million High and Dry

There will be wars over water within 15 years in South America and elsewhere.

Not to get into a silly global climate [whatever] debate here, but 18,000 is not a long time in the annals of the world. Is it a relic of the Ice Age then?

This is one of the most under-reported strategic concerns. It will be a large factor in several hotspots around the world, including the Golan Heights and Kashmir.

And in other breaking news 2 more glaciers disappeared in Glacier National Park.. there is nothing happening here, move along..

Lets see now two months ago DC got two feet of snow, Maine got rain.. that happened twice. Two weeks ago we got record breaking rain, 9.95 inches in 48 hours) one week ago we had record breaking heat(92 degrees).. most of it climate, but is very unusual..

Tragedies happen, people die and new meteorological records are made every year and none of them are a big deal in the scope of things. Hey, the blizzard of '78 set a record that still stands today.

Read the links I provided. The glaciers that supply 60% of the water supply and 60% of the electricity to Peru will be GONE on 15-20 years! Also gone will be the entire glacial system of the Andes, which supplies water to Bolivia and Equador. This will be a catastrophe that will not end for these people.

Again read the links. They will scare the crap out of you

Depends if there is rain /snow to replenish the water supply. There were Glaciers covering most of N America now there are very few there is still snow/rain that provide water.

Haven't read the article sounds like a MMGW scare article.
