American men in their 30s today are worse off than their fathers' generation, a reversal from a decade ago, when sons generally were better off than their fathers, a new study finds.
The study also says the typical American family's income has lagged far behind productivity growth since 2000, a departure from most of the post-World War II period.
The findings suggest "the up escalator that has historically ensured that each generation would do better than the last may not be working very well," says the study, released Friday.
In 2004, the median income for a man in his 30s was $35,010, the study says, 12 percent less than for men in their 30s in 1974 — their fathers' generation — adjusted for inflation. In 1994, median income for men in their 30s was $32,901, 5 percent higher than 30 years earlier.
The report also found that between 1947 and 1974, productivity, or output per hour, and median family income, adjusted for inflation, roughly doubled. Between 1974 and 2000, however, productivity rose 56 percent while income rose 29 percent. Between 2000 and 2005, productivity rose 16 percent while median income fell 2 percent, challenging "the notion that a rising tide will lift all boats," the report says.
*my edit: in other words you worked even harder than your predecessors to get someone ELSE even richer. My fortune 500 company recently laid off 5% of it's workforce while the CEO gave himself a nice raise... hmmmmm, yes we're the middle/upper middle class and we're getting F***ed hard
Lets see how sustainable it is that the rich keep getting richer while everyone else is getting poorer. It might never happen in my lifetime or my children's lifetime, but there will be a day of reckoning as the middle class disappears more and more.

Um, the rich will always get richer. It's a matter of basic mathematics. The focus should be on the size, and scope of gubmit, since it's cost is a burden to all a nations citizens, and hardest felt by those in the middle.

"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him." This is definitely true for small business owners. It was common for small business owners to buy summer homes, investment property, vacant lots ... stuff like that. I'm not talking about investment type people ... just regular restaurant, small business type people.
With the exception of dual nationality people who frequently have a home where they were born and a home here ... you rarely hear of this anymore. Most small business people are grinding out a paycheck. Ask some that you know ... they will tell you. Ask them what their fathers did when they were in business ... they'll tell you what I said above also.
I doubt many of these people would really complain about it. Most feel fortunate to control their own destiny. The American dream is still alive ... the goals have just shifted a bit. Being sucessfull is paying your bills and employing people ... making outside investments is a supreme luxury and no longer the norm.

You're just repeating the same point point I made in a thread a couple of weeks ago. You're right, our parents had it better than we do.
But we STILL want a capitalist economy
We still don't want to "Give" people free wages unless they WORK.
We still don't want to pay 50% of OUR MONEY to the gov't
We still don't want the gov't to control everything
We still like the idea that some people can go from rags to riches and others can't...tough sh1t for you on this one phokus!
