I saw it 20 years ago, only back then they called it "Dances With Wolves."
EDIT: I made this post prior to reading Darryl's post #7 where he says his wife made the same comparison, so please don't interpret my post as trying to plagiarize or anything like that.
I saw Dances With Wolves back in the day too. There are parallels for sure and James Cameron himself admitted he was influenced by dances with wolves....so? It was a great movie and Dances With Wolves never entered my mind once.

You don't have to "attempt" to look for a political message when the political message is smacking you in the face pretty much from the moment you sit down until the moment they run the credits. I mean, they may have just called it oil instead of the ridiculously named "unobtainium."
Yeah, the "unobtanium" got me too. Some writer tried to get a little too cute.
I saw it and thought it was a wonderful movie. It was two hours and fifty minutes long but I could barely tell it flowed so well. The story was well conceived and the technology was brilliant. There is tons of political stuff to chew on too, racism, exploitation, environment, religion and more.
Did anyone else see it?
Edit: if you haven't seen it in 3-D than you haven't seen it in my opinion
It will set the standard for which all movies try to compete with for the next 20 years... Like start wars before it, it deployed effects, and styles, and technology that will stand up for years...
Kind of like now when I watch a SyFy movie and their effect aren't even as good as a 1979 Start Wars... it makes it impossible to watch...
Avatar is the new standard.
Avatar will definitely have widespread influence on future movies, but it won't be as widespread as many think. After all, most movies are not going to have a $300 million budget to do the things Avatar did.
And there's no way it will be remembered as the greatest of all time. The plot just wasn't all that great. It was an effects-laden, mildly entertaining piece of easily predictable eye candy. Pretty much the ID4 of the 00's.
