AIR America is close to losing its New York flagship station - knocking Al Franken and his liberal colleagues off the air on their second anniversary.


The network has a two-year lease with WLIB (AM 1190) that is reportedly set to expire April 1 - and at least one reliable report says it is "extremely likely" the deal will not be renewed.

Losing its New York outlet would be a serious blow to the fledgling liberal radio network. "Radio Equalizer" blogger Brian Maloney - who blew the whistle on questionable loans to the lefty network last year - published the first report that WLIB was on the verge of evicting Air America some time soon.

Air America's options for a new home are not promising. All of the city's other strong-signal stations are spoken for, leaving only weak-signal "fringe" stations that do not cover the entire city and suburbs. Air America parent Piquant LLC has reportedly been paying Inner City Broadcasting - controlled by former Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton and his son, Pierre - $2.5 million a year

AA is about to be booted out of its flagship NY radio station with no alternative outlet for the market, despite PAYING to have their booring propaganda rants broadcast...apparently to nobody's ears.

Remember Patters et. al. claims that AA was on the rise with millions starved for programming 'speaking truth to power'?

Not the point. You have the NYT, LAT, WaPo, etc and ABC,CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC and NPR for starters to spin the liberal worldview.

Why do they even need radio stations when the younger generation (the market radio cares about 25-54) chooses podcasts and streaming audio?

Also, I would take Murdochs personal ball washer John Mainelli with a grain of salt, he's been saying they were doomed for well over a year now.

Again missing the point. People PAY to advertise and listen to Rush. Gawd knows why, but they do. In contrast, Liberal Radio has to PAY THE NYC STATION $2.5M to be able to be on the air. Nobody wants to advertise on stations with less than a 1 rating.

It's a different business arrangement that doesn't speak to the profitability of the show. What usually happens in these cases is the program pays the station, but gets to keep the advertising revenue. Locally, 1510 The Zone operates the same way. On the other hand, most stations prefer to sell the advertising themselves, so they have to pay their programs. The two real questions to ask are:
-Does the show bring in more revenue that it costs?
-Does this station have this same arrangement with all programs, or just this one?

But this is national syndication, which means that the station (or broadcasting group ie: Entercom or Clearchannel) pays for the right right to carry the show on x number of stations, allowing them to generate revenues from the advertising.

If a nationally syndicated show has to pay a station to carry it, it means the show doesn't/can't generate enough revenue to make it attractive to the station.

Now, I don't like this happening because I am all for the balance of views, but I'm wondering what AA can do to increase its listenership.

They are talking about one station. And if they don't renew the AAR contract at that one station, that station is already set to air either Ed Shulz or Rev. Sharpton. So, bottom line...much ado about nothin.


This is one station in the heart of liberal nation, which really bugs the Post...there are these other stations to choose from, in addition to streaming, podcast, and XM.
