It is a theory proposed by a social scientist (I believe that to be an oxymoron) and in my view invalid. Seems like a "just so" story made to 'explain' i.e. legitimize a viewpoint.

There is not time enough in life to correct the misinformation spewed in the name of liberalsim.

Pissah, the guy has written a number of books, and his theory does help explain the Republican successes. The strong father-nurturing parent metaphor does work to explain the relationship between differing conservative (or liberal) views. He is not saying the strong father model is wrong or evil; he's saying it's simply the worldview that describes most conservatives. Why are you against this theory so quickly? Have you studied it? And what alternative theory do you have? You're getting awfully defensive today for no apparent reason? Feeling guilty?

I know psychobabble garbage when I see it. It's not up to me to become a 'social scientist' and invent a kockamamie theory of my own.

Father knows best bicches!

Edit - More often than not, the difference between a functional and disfunctional family is the prescence of a strong father figure.

These are the two best nutshell encapsulations of the differences between liberals and conservatives that I've ever heard (sorry, Patters, your Lakoff one doesn't come close to these). The first was by Andy Rooney, I don't know who originally said the second.

Conservatives believe that people are basically bad, but they'll do alright if you leave them alone.
Liberals believe that people are basically good, but they need all the help they can get.

Liberals believe conservatives are evil.
Conservatives believe liberals are idiots.

Quit mimicking Harry Boy. He's better at flippant remarks than you. Your anti-social scientist mentality is very dated. After all, even Republican think tanks use it nowadays.

The Republicans have reached out to the moderates by framing their arguments in a nuturing way. For instance, partial birth abortion, which is a procedure that affects very few women, became a major issue for Republicans because it was used to portray Republican opposition to women's rights as compassionate. Terms like conservative compassion and tax relief (as opposed to cuts) were also used in a similar way. His ideas are highly regarded by a number of thinkers and political leaders.

Wistah, you can look of George Lakoff on the internet and find some articles by him, but the book I'm referring to is "don't think like an elephant" with a forward by Howrad Dean. The theory is very interesting and it pays tremendous respect to conservatives and is sharply critical of liberals. The book explains how conservatives effectively pushed and promoted their ideas, and also unified there various factions (business, religious, tax, and other conservatives).
