You know what Harry? This gave me the "what in the world is going on here" reaction you're always expressing.
You know why? We're prejudiced by our environments.
You have here a human being. That human being may in fact be the best for the job.
For someone of your generation, you may have this same reaction for women in charge or African Americans in charge, or Hispanics in charge. For people of my generation, AT THE GUT LEVEL, there's more acceptance for ethnic or gender equality. For people younger than men, there's more acceptance for sexual orientation or choosing one's own gender.
If your mind remains pliable, you recognize that all that matters is whether this is a qualified human being for the job.
Generally speaking, we all talk the talk on that point. Then on the right, people attempt to attack any such person being in charge, on the basis that he or she must not be qualified, but they disproportionately target minority appointees (whether the minority status is ethnic, gender/orientation, or representation by gender in politics.) On the left, generally speaking, such appointees are thought to represent progress, not as a novelty or as a token, but as a "downpayment" on the notion that one day the minority status just won't matter.
You're getting older, I'm getting older. Every generation we move toward the day when we indeed judge one another not by the color of our skin (or our sexual orientation or gender identity,) but by the content of our character.
