I'm not surprised by an increase, but I am surprised by the size of it.
Gun permits surge in state
Worries on crime, stricter laws cited
By Peter Schworm and Matt Carroll
Globe Staff / December 20, 2009
The number of gun permits issued in Massachusetts surged by more than 15 percent over the past two years, reversing nearly a decade of steady declines and marking a pronounced departure for a state known for its antigun sentiment.
The magnitude of the rise, evident in nearly every corner of the state, surprised law enforcement officials, and gun advocates and opponents alike.

Maybe MA has more to worry about than the rest of the country?
National crime statistics provided to the FBI by law enforcement agencies across the nation show a 4.4 percent decline in the number of violent crimes -- murder, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault -- during the first six months of this year compared with the same period a year ago. Even more surprising, property crimes such as burglary, theft and motor vehicle theft dropped by 6.1 percent this year compared with last.
And despite the horrific series of attacks on police in the Seattle area this year -- including the fatal shootings of four officers in Lakewood -- 2009 will go down as one of the safest years ever for American police officers. According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, 124 police officers have been killed so far this year, the fewest line-of-duty deaths since 108 officers were killed in 1959.
Interesting - apparently crime IS up in Ma. - altho it seems to be on the downturn in every other state.
BOSTON — High unemployment. More people on food stamps. Fewer homeowners. Yet for all the signs of recession, one thing is missing: More crime.
Nationally, at least.
Figures released Monday by the FBI show national declines in murder, car thefts and other crimes. The trend was not as pronounced in Massachusetts, where certain crimes in select cities were on the rise.
Overall, property crimes fell by 6.1 percent, and violent crimes by 4.4 percent, according to the data. Crime rates haven’t been this low since the 1960s, and are nowhere near the peak reached in the early 1990s.
Violent crime in the six-month period rose in every Massachusetts city with a population of more than 100,000, except for Boston. (The others are Cambridge, Lowell, Springfield and Worcester.)
I guess we know who's buying the guns in Ma. now. It's the violent criminals.

Did you not read the article I posted? It's about people who are LEGALLY obtaining their license to carry a firearm.

To Libs there is no such thing. Guns scare them. It does not matter legal or otherwise.

Guns scare me too, but guess what? If they scare you, then don't get one. Already we have massive regulation attached to the legal right we each hold to owning a weapon. I'm pro-gun control too. I like that we have a process people need to follow. However, that process should not be overly restrictive. The problem are those who have a weapon illegally.

Did you not think about where the guns come from?
At least 14% of crimes committed which involved a gun involved guns which were legally bought. 80% of gun carrying criminals reported they got their guns from friends, family, street buys, theft, and other illegal means. How many of those guns taken from friends and family do you think were registered weapons? At least some of them, I'm sure. Same for those bought on the street. Most of the stolen weapons were probably legal guns as well.
Interestingly enough - for all those people who buy a gun "to protect themselves" there were only 225 cases of justifiable homicide (when a citizen kills a felon during the commission of a criminal offense} in the entire United States in 2002. And only 184 of them involved a citizen with a gun.

I purchased 2 BB-guns this year! Does that count?
One is a high-powered rifle that shoots pellets at 1200ft per second. If I shot someone in the head, it would prolly kill them. But I bought them cause I like to shoot at targets and every now & then, a pesky squirrel!
