Obama is pretty much what I expected -- a little worse, but not a lot worse. He has, from a liberal point of view, done a number of good things. Scrapping the defense shield in Eastern Europe, passing a wage rights bill for women that had been blocked by Republicans for years, putting real limits on lobbyists, allowing federal support for stem cell research, not to mention the appointment of Sotomayor and the Stimulus bill.

Civil rights is always a struggle. It took blacks nearly 200 years to get equality under the law, and in many ways it took women longer. Gays have done quite well in terms of gaining rights, but the tyranny of the majority, which wants to protect its special rights, is certainly a problem.

I think we'll see more states legalizing gay marriage in the next ten years, especially given the reality that it's the older people who block gay marriage.
