WASHINGTON – Independents who swept Barack Obama to a historic 2008 victory broke big for Republicans on Tuesday as the GOP wrested political control from Democrats in Virginia and New Jersey, a troubling sign for the president and his party heading into an important midterm election year.
Conservative Republican Bob McDonnell's victory in the Virginia governor's race over Democrat R. Creigh Deeds and moderate Republican Chris Christie's ouster of unpopular New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine was a double-barreled triumph for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in national elections in 2006 and 2008.
The outcomes were sure to feed discussion about the state of the electorate, the status of the diverse coalition that sent Obama to the White House and the limits of the president's influence — on the party's base of support and on moderate current lawmakers he needs to advance his legislative priorities.
His signature issue of health care reform was dealt a blow hours before polls closed when Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid signaled that Congress may not complete health care legislation this year, missing Obama's deadline and pushing debate into a congressional election year.
Democrats are losing the independents ?????
Time for a CHANGE !

Re: GOP sweep: Big governor victories in Virginia, NJ
Barry lived in NJ for the past 3 weeks and urged his supporters to turn out for his good friend J Corzine.
I am happier about the outsider, conservative non politician Hoffman in NY.

It is a good size referendum on his policies. He is way to the left and the country isn't. It's also going to make a strong statement to Democrats in Red or Purple states that if they vote for all this Leftist crap they'll join the unemployed.

Those independent voters who helped elect Obama went with the
REPUBLICAN dispite the fact that Obama spent a lot of time campaigning
in New Jersey for the loser !
If the Democrats won Virginia and New Jersey that would be claiming
victory for Obama.
Well they lost... so you be the judge.
One thing we know for sure... Obama did not deliver his independent voters.

He really isn't, but by all means, continue propagating that myth.
I mean, if you guys want to get on the party hats about a lackluster candidate and an incredibly unpopular incumbent Governor losing in a midterm election, more power to you.

Last time the pubs took NJ and Va in the off year election was 1993, last time the dems took Nj & VA gov races was 2005 think about it....

Tonight's elections might not seem like much on the surface, but all those Democrats in moderate states up for re-election in 2010 are losing their lunch right about now. These results will not help Obama advance his agenda over the next 12 months.
Re: GOP sweep: Big governor victories in Virginia, NJ
I think this is a combination of a lot of things, but the major ingredient to me, is tea. I think this is a referendum on big government, out of control spending, bailouts, and incumbents. DC better pay attention.
