why can't I go with a plan that pays no middle man. Why can't I get the same coverage at a better rate? Why can't EVERYONE?
Because not EVERYONE wants just ANYONE to have the same things they think they "earned" by somehow being better, smarter, stronger, or safer.
There was an interesting study I read about a few weeks ago - it was about the value people put on things they own - and how it differs when they own it or when someone else owns it - and again when they think it may be taken away from them and given to someone else. The study went on to say that a few years ago they asked people if they were happy with their health insurance and the majority of people said "no." Once the talk turned to making them somehow afraid that they were going to lose their insurance due to a National Health Care Plan or something similar the very same people began saying "yes, I'm satisfied" because even the mere thought of losing something they thought they had that someone else didn't have became unbearable to them.
The people doing the survey gave half a room full of college students a mug with the name of the college on it. They then proceed to ask the kids WITH the cup what they thought it was worth - and they asked the same question of the kids without the cup. On the average the kids WITH the cup put a monetary value of more than two times what the kids without the cup had placed on it. When the survey takers then asked the kids with the cups what they thought they would be worth to the kids without the cups - they raised the dollar amount by a third again.
In other words, if a person thinks something they have that other people don't have is in danger of becoming something everyone has - they suddenly decide it's worth a lot more than it is - and they don't want to give it up. Not only do they not want to give it up, they don't want anyone else to get something like it - they seem to think they will lose their "specialness" somehow if a possession becomes common.
So it goes with health insurance apparently.
You can't be "better than" someone else if everyone's got what you have - at least not if you define your own worth as a person by your possessions.

I don't make over $250K. But my taxes are going up and so are yours because they're taxing all kind of medical items, including health insurance, to pay for it.
We will all pay for it, the obamans are taxing everyone but hiding it as taxing the companies who will then pass it on. And, yes, many people will choose the public option, whose cost will then skyrocket as the CBO score was for just the currently uninsured, not those who choose to "go public".
I will hapily pay higher taxes so more people will be insured. I am paying higher insurance bills now, so....
we just differ on our views about what we deserve as americans.
As long as you understand that your new higher bill will be even higher when you're also paying for others.
I doubt it.
The public plan will spend no advertising dollars, will not be profit based, and most importantly will be using the same equipment, doctors and hospitals....
I'm sure they will be able to do better than the 62 cents per dollar that gets spent on ACTUAL healthcare now.
I will hapily pay higher taxes so more people will be insured.
Ditto.
Ditto for MrPFnV, too. And for all the taxpaying little PFnV clan as well. The kids and the Mr and me are all pretty divided on our political beliefs and among the 5 of us we cover all end of the political spectrum - but there's one thing we all agree upon - and that's that none of us mind if our taxes go up if it means that people less fortunate than ourselves can access the health care system (and not just the ER) when they need it. We go from the bluest of the blue to the reddest of the red but that's one place we meet without arguement - understanding the need for all Americans to have health insurance if they so choose.
Hell, even if they don't. (My opinion as a medical-type person, not necessarily that of the rest of the clan.) I've been in health care long enough to know that people don't always know what's good for them - sometimes they need a nudge - like auto insurance, for instance. No insurance, no drive. Works for me.

If you'll be happy to pay higher taxes, good for you. But the reality of the situation is that the choice is not yours to make - you will be forced to pay higher taxes. More of you hard-earned money is going to be taken away from you, to pay for the benefits of others who may be home drinking beer for a living and you have no say in the matter. At least it's nice to know you're happy with that. And here's the kicker, there will still be 25 million Americans who will be uninsured. Even better, the cost of health care will rise, the quality will be worse, and you will have to wait much longer for care in the future. But hey, at least you're happy being forced to pay more for an inferior product. As they say here in the South, Bless Your Heart.

Since this is so wonderful and deficit neutral why has congress exempted themselves and Federal employees.....

We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."

You do realize that many of those currently uninsured hold jobs and pay taxes, don't you? That many of them would gladly pay for insurance if only they could find someone willing to insure them?

Bless your heart, too, you wanna back that up with something concrete?

I was told how patriotic it was for us to spend trillions in Iraq...and now pay for something that I was told was going to pay for itself....
I know it sucks to help pay for everyone to get healthy...what a crappy thing to pay for.
