Okay ... a divergence from the usual political bantering.
How about this direction the Navy is taking? This baby did like 50mph for 4-hours.
They make these in Harry-Land up in Maine.
I think all 4 branches of the military need to divert most of their funding for more usefull equipment - stuff that can be used against smaller forces which is what we are up against most of the time. Small well trained and expertly prepared forces are a major challenge militarily. We still have problems with a few dozen people with ied's, AK-47's, grenade launchers and donkeys.
Independence, a 418-foot warship built in Alabama, boasts a top speed in excess of 45 knots, or about 52 mph, and sustained 44 knots for four hours during builder trials that wrapped up this month off the Gulf Coast. The 378-foot Freedom, a ship built in Wisconsin by a competing defense contractor, has put up similar numbers.
Both versions of the Littoral Combat Ship use powerful diesel engines, as well as gas turbines for extra speed. They use steerable waterjets instead of propellers and rudders and have shallower drafts than conventional warships, letting them zoom close to shore.
The ships, better able to chase down pirates, have been fast-tracked because the Navy wants vessels that can operate in coastal, or littoral, waters. Freedom is due to be deployed next year, two years ahead of schedule

Yeah baby!!!!!! Take that anyone thinking of causing us harm!! Now I don't mind my tax dollars spent on pieces of art like that! At least a few anyway!
I wish they posted a video of the ship blowing up a couple of pirate boats....

History repeating itself...going back to what the smaller ships were originally used for before the 50s and 60s: escort, protection, chase, hunting, access to small ports etc.

Littoral Combat Ships have been on the drawing board for a while.. in fact I know a guy who teaches a course on them at the Navy War College in Newport... not sure how he does it, as much of this is conceptual..

There is enough information that you can go beyond a concept to teaching classes...especially if you showcase the direct descendants of it like the pre-Cold War era ships and the current ships.

He is a former masters level educated commercial fisherman... not really a military man... not contesting what can be taught, but the Navy War College is fairly high level and high tech.. he has been doing it almost since the inception of this program. From what I understand he is focusing on navigation in "shallow waters"...

"shallow waters" fits right in as that's where littoral in littoral combat ship comes from.
the school is high level and high tech but there is also a huge focus on tactics and operation and if they are going to be having a ship program that operates in an area that has been neglected by most of the navy for well over a century it makes sense to turn to someone with an education and experience operating vessels in that area of sea...

Are your comments contradictory, thought you wanted us out of wars??? And weren't looking for the Cindy Sheehans of the world.
They don't launch often.. once in Feb '08 and most recently Sept. '08, prior to that was June of '05... a little hyperbole to start the morning???..
