Okay ... a divergence from the usual political bantering.
How about this direction the Navy is taking? This baby did like 50mph for 4-hours.
They make these in Harry-Land up in Maine.
I think all 4 branches of the military need to divert most of their funding for more usefull equipment - stuff that can be used against smaller forces which is what we are up against most of the time. Small well trained and expertly prepared forces are a major challenge militarily. We still have problems with a few dozen people with ied's, AK-47's, grenade launchers and donkeys.
Very cool toy. It would be even cooler if a millionaire was buying it to play with...
"Early cost estimates for Littoral Combat Ships were about $220 million apiece, but costs spiraled because of the Navy's requirements and its desire to expedite construction. The cost of the ships is capped at $460 million apiece, starting in the new fiscal year.
While they're fast, they aren't necessarily the fastest military ships afloat. The Navy used to have missile-equipped hydrofoils and the Marines' air-cushioned landing craft is capable of similar speeds, Wertheim said. And smaller ships are capable of higher speeds."
But never mind that.
Anyone know what the range of this hot rod is?

Thank God they finally got around to building coast guard cutters for the Navy... you guys do realize we've had a whole military service devoted to "littoral warfare" since the 1700s right?
Granted, attaching the USCG to the Navy in time of war, while practical, does not allow for all the cool new junk on the cool new boat... but in terms of whether you can ping a pirate with one, I'm thinkin' yeah, not a problem.
Eh well. Whatever the military wants, I guess. Freedom's not free, and Independence comes with strings attached, or something like that

Huge difference between the lightly armed cutters and those ships. Missions aren't even close

Yeah but of course... we need another shallow-water navy
Meanwhile, of course, the USCG wanted to develop a "next generation" of vessels... wait for it... The "Deepwater Project."
From what I can tell we're bolting together fastship technology with the need for landing craft, a helicopter carrier, and of course a shallow draft so it can work off the coast... and getting excited about it.
