MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- A former Kremlin adviser has criticized Moscow's New Year deadline for Ukraine to accept a large gas-price increase, saying the demand indicated resurgent Russian imperialism.
Meanwhile on Saturday Europe warily watched the standoff amid warnings that its supplies could also be affected.
Ukraine has hitherto received one-third of its natural gas from Russia at the heavily subsidized rate of $50 (€42) per 1,000 cubic meters, in addition to its domestic supply and imports from Turkmenistan.
But Russia's Kremlin-controlled gas company Gazprom has now threatened to cut supplies to Ukraine on Sunday if Kiev does not agree to pay more than four times the current rate, which is closer to what most Western European countries pay.
"If Ukraine doesn't sign a contract to buy gas by the appointed hour before the New Year, then at 10 o'clock a.m. on the 1st of January we will put a complete stop to delivery of all gas from the Russian Federation to the Ukraine," said Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller. "These actions will be precise and resolute."

Is there any Oil in Siberia or won't Koffi Annan Let them dig for it (Save The Snow Tigers)

Siberia's not in Ukraine, it's in Russia (and part of it is in Borat's homeland: Kazakhstan). And natural gas isn't made from crude oil (though it can sometimes be found in oil wells, where it's called casinghead gas). I know facts are overrated, but I'm sure you can absorb these into another well thought-out response.
Pow! Harry Boy, you may be out of your element on on this one (I know, big surprise).
This appears to be retaliation for Yuschenkos victory and the Orange Revoilution, pure and simple, political retribution.
Kinda like Enron hiking Californias fuel prices to get Governor Gray out of office and install the Terminator. Same, but different.
Thats Enron, and Ken Lay. As in, Bush Pioneer Ken Lay. As in, Karl Rove vested in Enron. The one who has until now managed to avoid his inevitable looong sentence in prison.
Its all sort of sickeningly related....for those who pay attention. Now, how about that secret Cheney energy task force??

Years ago I drove a Cab part time in Harvard Sq, I had fares from the college that could tell you how many inches it was from Brattle St to the moon, but if you asked them why the Chicken crossed the road they would be dumbfounded. Many of them took a cab because they couldn't find their own way home.

Many of them took a cab because they could afford to and couldn't be bothered finding their own way home.
