Why is America split? Well, it mirrors the split in the world. One half believes that there is a moral decay caused by lack of religion and moral values. Witness the growth in drug use, violent crime, rudeness, same sex marriages and so on. That half looks back to a time when things were better, crime was lower and so on. People in the 1950s could leave their doors open and you could walk the streets safely at night.
They see the pervasive influence of "political correctness", increasing gay rights, rehabilitation not punishment and so on. This half believes that you get as far as your talents and work take you and so the poor deserve their lot. Witness Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell as examples that people can make it to the top if they work hard enough. This half also believes that the free market means innovation, talent rising to the top and so on. Bill Gates's Windows runs on 90% of the world's computers, thanks to the power of the free market. Windows is there because people invested in the company, researched and developed the product and marketed it properly. His wealth is testament to his hard work and, anyway, he plans to give 90% of it away.

What does the other half think? They are scared by religion. They see it as a divider (see the Christian Right, Islamic fundamentalism and so on). They don't believe in God and see religion as social control. They don't see things as having been better in the past; they see a past where poor people starved to death, people were beaten for sitting in the wrong part of the bus and kids born out of wedlock were shut away in asylums.
They believe that liberalism has improved the lot of many people including gay people and ethnic minorities who no longer have to sit where they are told on the bus. Witness Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell as examples of people helped to the top by subsidised education, liberalised race laws and immigration in the case of General Powell.
They blame rampant capitalism for society's ills. Does Bill Gates REALLY deserve all that money, when there are people living on food stamps? Is it any wonder that people commit crime when they see no solution legally?

The American right-wing: Why do they agree with Islamic fundamentalists so much?
Welcome to the planet Earth. It seems as if you're somewhat confused about our society. No problem. Just ignore those silly DU websites and mainstream media. Read some books do some research and above all avoid listening to Howard Dean. He's gone mad.

Bill Gates, whom I personally despise, EARNED that money. In the process of earning it, he created a dozen billionaires and thousands of multi-millionaires and employed several hundred thousand families. All of them paid taxes that subsidized children of families where parents were totally irresponsible.
What a bastid.

I don't listen to Howard Dean or any DU websites. I listen to the leaders of the American right-wing, like Pat Robertson and James Dobson. They are insane. They also want to do all the things that I mentioned in my list, just like Islamic Fundamentalists.

I'm an American, and as far as I'm concerned, these fundamentalists can move out of the country if they don't like our American values like equality, separation of church and state, and liberty. They should move to Iran where their political views are more in line.

Last time I checked unlike Howie Dean these guys are not the head of the RNC. So I guess those guys shouldn't be on TV, but it is ok for Michael Moore to make propaganda left wing movies?

What's your equality, screw the white straight guy as much as possible because of things that happened hundred years ago, or shove in his face the "alternative" lifestyle? Or is your definition of equality, freedom of religion as long as it is not christianity? Be tolerant to everyone except white straight christian suburban men?

What's wrong with Liberty and Justice for ALL? If you hate America so much for it's values and what it stands for...why do you continue to live here?

Liberalism is not what America stands for and why do you stay here when it won't change for the worse to suit your petty ideology. Why do you insist on the US being like the EU, there is a reason our ancestors left Europe now you want to set us back 300 years, no thanks!

FYI...the majority of our Founding Fathers were Liberal.

A good read...

There is a saying that your right to swing your fist ends where my nose begins. Is whitey at that point? Is his face really getting shoved into alternative lifestyles? Or is whitey poking his own face in there? Don't you claim to be free and have the right to live your life how you want as long as you don't hurt anyone? Isn't the government there to protect your choice in lifestyle?
