Well Today I am sick and on the couch, so I decided to see what other documentaries Netflix has to watch. One of the suggestions was "Blind Spot", which was made I believe in 08, and is about the same idea of Peak Oil.
By far and away a much better documentary about the issues, problems, and the explanation of why the entire system, built on oil, will "collapse" the second production begins to decline.
On another note, both the films make the point that the human population has exploded perfect in step with the use of Oil as a way to make life easier / better, but the end result is more people can be sustained.
Oil can produce the work 100s of people can provide, and therefore more gets done with less efforts, which equals more population.
They make the point that there will be a dramatic reduction in population due to food shortages, and just about everything else, medical availibility, etc... the list goes on.
I think, ok, what can I do to be ready for that, nothing nut case like, but small simple things I can do to ensure when it happens, I am one of the lucky ones to survive thought he transition period. My initial thought is to print as many manuals from the internet as possible... how to grow food is obvious, and we already have a few things we grow... but how do I get, and store seeds for the next year... something I would have no clue... Ok I can do that... I can stock up on foods like Beans... they are cheap and you can easily store them, and they last a long time... or that's easy...
And here is where it gets worthless to plan...
Ok, so now my life during this transition is not too bad... but everyone else who didn't prepare, is looking at my beans, and crops, and they want some... ok, so I need a gun to protect myself... ok, but they will have hundreds of hungry desperate people, and I have me...
So then in Collapse, he says the people who form into families or groups will survive... I can see that becuase you need a group of people to protect what you have, you need people to work and protect your way of life, it's why we have the military today actually!
However... I live in a town, that has 1 million people within a 40 minute drive from us... no matter what steps, no matter how much food / guns I have, there will not be enough to stop hungry desperate people who need food as well... We live near a river and ocean where we can fish, but leaving your camp is asking to be killed for your gun / food...
The end result that I am getting at...
This may happen, and life may go crazy... but preparing for it, as a normal person is pointless... you won't be able to make it unless you have a brick wall around our house, or where ever you plan on making your stand... you need to protect your crops, livestock, etc... from potentially 100,000's of people. Who has a compound that can protect that? No one, our houses these days can't even protect us, I could come through a wall with the slightest of efforts.
So although I find these movies interesting, what is the end result? Buy a bunch of seeds and guns? I think like most people, we rather just bury our heads in the sand, and deal with it when we are forced too.
Even the most prepared, will fail with a 95% rate. Even when I have nothing, I bet I can out smart most people who have prepared, and use some others as distraction to come in and steal what you have... The lawlessness, the desperation, and the sheer number of people we would have to compete with, makes it a fools game to prepare...
