I do have to throw a bone to PinNY and Real World here. I remember reading a few years ago a similar analysis about Olympic games wreaking economic havoc on the cities they leave behind, specifically Sarajevo I think, and am kicking myself for forgetting that the much heralded economic gains are far from universally accepted. I suppose I'm guilty of ignoring that substantive opposition to the games, and it's certainly a fair point, though I don't think there's consensus on the economic pitfalls v. gain of having them, otherwise established cities like Tokyo and London wouldn't be clamoring for them. I do think that it's likely that an analysis based solely on specific debt incurred from the infrastructure is incomplete and ignores some of the immeasurable tourism and otherwise residual positive effects that the games can have though.

That being said, it's not what the meat of the politicization of Obama's trip has been about, and if you asked most that are clamoring for blood I believe you wouldn't find any such economic argument being posited. I also don't remember any criticism of Mitt Romney who cut his teeth running Salt Lake City (amidst considerable scandal). And if you want to talk violence and corruption, Chicago is Disneyland compared to Rio. The simple fact is that the right saw opportunity here to politicize a somewhat innocuous pitch by Obama, setting it up as a potential "embarrassment" and then celebrating the "failure" by spinning it as a worldwide rebuke of Obama's arrogance and weakness. The idea that the IOC choosing Rio over Chicago is some kind of referendum on Obama's standing in the world, or that it reflects a disrespect for him is a pathetic and dirty lie. I doubt very much that the Japanese are claiming Yukio Hotayama was somehow slapped aroung by the world community because he was one of many leaders to give a pitch and not get the games.

IOC politics is another matter, but...... world politics, NO.....

Chicago never had much of a shot, not against Rio.......... Like I said, it's probably not a bad thing either. Economically, it's usually good in the short term, riunous oin the long-term. For the record, I have no problem that Obama went over there. If I were him, I wouldn't have, because....... like I said, Chicago was a real uphill battle against Rio and the whole "no games ever in SA angle".
Good post, I totally agree with you here.

Over-exposure. People are getting tired of the big smile and flowery words. We need results, not promises. We need improvement, not just hope.

Getting old. And this little jaunt didn't help.

Is everybody on this Planet supposed to fall to their knees and lower their heads everytime this a$s hole Obama opens his mouth.

Obama himself is the cause of the backlash, he is really starting to believe that he is God, those people in other countrys don't give a ***** about him, or Oprah Winfrey.

The hell with the Olympics Barry start doing something about the economy, stopping the wars and closing Gitmo and another thing, nobody cares what Oprah Winfrey wants or does she's just another "Show Biz ***** Head"

When all the truth is sifted it will be known that this was more about the USOC vs. the OC, and Obama was not as much a major player as he thought he was..

One of my fave Rio movies was Pixote.. saw it at a movie house on Comm ave, forget the name in the early 80's.. did not enamor me to this Brazilian City... it does not appear to be available any more.. but it was wake up call about Brazil.

It won't be surprising now to hear that the "Obama Groupies" will be wanting the rest of the world to boycott the olympics.

In the next two weeks Queen Oprah will gain 300 lbs.
