Not dishonest at all. No one's excited at the prospect of a pay cut, but not everyone is devestated by it.
Our office does a good deal of charity work without calling it "charity work" in order to allow patients to maintain an appearance of dignity. We routinely waive co-payments for those who cannot afford to make them, we routinely offer low cost treatment to those without insurance and we routinely work with our patients and with other physicians to provide decent care at a reduced rate.
The physician I work for is from a communist country - he's all about freedom and he's all about National Health Care. In fact, he finds it almost impossible to believe that this country does not offer it when even the most horrible of dictatorships offer it.
Not every physician is about getting rich. Most of them are in it for the satisfaction they receive from helping people. Insurance companies prevent that much of the time. Not only do they NOT pay you much of the time, they do everything in their power to prevent you from helping others without payment. If they find out you've treated someone without charging a co-pay that patient must prove to THEM (not to you) that they cannot afford the payment - otherwise the insurance company holds the doctor in violation of contract and refuses to pay future amounts for other patients with the same insurance.
Most doctors, mine included, are sick to death of the game playing and the constant hassle to get payment for services rendered. They're tired of having their diagnosis questioned and their treatment denied. They're tired of having nurses and desk-warmers reverse their medical decisions. Contrary to what you may have read in some right wing publication, most doctors are pretty happy with Medicare patients and government insurance. They pay in a timely fashion, they don't often question your judgement, they don't interfere with patient care and they don't demand that you refile each and every claim half a dozen times before they'll pay you. You follow their rules and they're good to work with.
So, no, my doctor is not dishonest. He's a good doctor who consistantly puts his patient's needs on the same par as his own - sometimes above.

The 'game playing' is largely a result of government involvement and unwillingness to address lawsuit reform. More government involvement will make the problem worse not better, but you can keep drinking the Kool Aid the messiah loves you.

Lawsuit reform is the exclusive right of the states, would not want Prez Obama interfering with states rights now would you... tort reform is such a trite response to what is essentially a state issue.
Texas has done some reform in this issue, and so far it has not translated into less insurance costs for the doctors.. wonder who is making some money here???

Replace the ambulance & tank, with a vacation to vegas, and a 60" flat screen, and you've got that bankrupt couple next door, who have 5 maxed out credit cards. Hey, the flat screen costs less than the trip to vegas, so I guess it was a good buy eh?
