Re: Washington backlash grows against Acorn
Willing to bet that ACORN will flourish despite all the rhetoric, and the law of unintended consequences will prevail, as it usually does.. it will reemerge as a stronger advocate for the poor..
ACORN relies on quite a bit of private funding, and suspect those who donate will donate more.. also suspect that by stopping public funding, some of the restrictions on ACORN will allow them more freedom on how they operate..
ACORN scandal: How much federal funding does it get? | csmonitor.com
Quote:
According to a Congressional report, the group has received $53 million in federal funds since 1994. But the nonpartisan Politifact.com reported in May that most of that money went to the ACORN Housing Corporation, one of the group's many affiliates.
The moves by the House and Senate would have minimal impact financially on the group, says ACORN CEO Bertha Lewis.

Of course the right will grandstand this issue, take Bobby Jindal.. he boa(Please be quiet - edited)lly told the state of La. to cease all state funding to ACORN.. the problem is that La. does not fund any ACORN activities... a very bold, decisive move..
Quote:
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal issued an executive order to keep any state money from going to the controversy-wracked Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, which has its national headquarters in New Orleans.
According to the state's Division of Administration, no state agencies have existing contracts with ACORN.
