I get it, but it's still out of line. If I was Obama, I would have been throwing my Budwieser at the TV. It was offensive even if it was a joke about Drudge.

None of it is offensive at all if you stop giving a *****.... Oh, and it's not giving up, it's achieving clarity.
Don't get too excited. This has nothing to do with religion. Maher was wrong. I still like his show. I'm not on the verge of any conversion just because and atheist was wrong. Watching his show doesn't help him as I have a subscription to HBO anyways.
That's OK. Rome wasn't built in a day, .... either PRE- or POST-Christianity.

Many have previously noticed Maher's antipathy toward religion and morals, in general, so this is not a "sudden epiphany", as you imply. After all, Maher was virtually BANNED from TV for about 2 or 3 years after his absolutely disgusting comments after 9/11, when he said "the hijack/terrorists at least showed the 'courage' of their 'convictions' (to hijack four planes and destroy 3000 people in one day)". Yeah, like Adolph Hitler, Josef Stalin, Mao, Charles Manson, and other sociopaths. Unbelievable. But Maher did it, AND he never apologized for it. Serious problems in the head for Bill Maher. Very serious.

Maher's comment occured on Sept. 17, 2001, his show kept running on ABC. It was "not renewed" after June 16, 2002. By early 2003, he was already on HBO hosting Real Time.
