Many medicines are indirectly responsible. They cause xerostomia,(dry mouth) which reduces the level of saliva that essentially washes away the bacteria responsible for decay and perio disease. With no saliva, your risk factors rise....
As for the dental insurance, pray that they don't include it in health care reform.. Insurance companies love dental insurance because their liability is capped (no pun) at the limits of the plan (usually $1000-$2000 per year) Anything above that and you're on your own. The problem is that many of these plans had $1000 limits when they were started in the 70's and haven't been adjusted for inflation.
The dental market is primarily a PPO model with patients paying less at participating dentists than by going outside the network. Companies can write policies across state lines and it's very competitive for employers and usually is cheap for them to provide it. The DMO model (dental HMO) is usually limited to large clinics hiring new grads or foreign-trained grads in states where it's allowed and they get paid a small fee monthly whether you see them or not...It's in their interest NOT to see you (they are getting paid anyhow) or find procedures that aren't covered. This is a small percentage of the dental market for obvious reasons. Companies that purchase this option often go to the PPO (preferred provider option) and 6 months or a year of dissatisfied employees and minimal savings for the employer.
