Nixon enlisted secret service to spy on Ted Kennedy
Found this story - kind of interesting. We make a huge deal about spying and infringement on our rights like it's a new fad ... but it isn't really - it's been going on for a long time we're just better at it now. Anyways ... interesting story regarding Mr. Paranoia himself - Richard Nixon.
WASHINGTON — Ted Kennedy, who died Tuesday, so enraged Richard Nixon that the disgraced president pushed in 1971 for snooping on the senator for proof he cheated on his wife, according to once-secret recordings.
Quote:
Nixon also says he will give the senator, who lost two older brothers to assassins' bullets, US Secret Service protection during the campaign to avoid any blame in case someone targets Kennedy -- then orders aides to use those official bodyguards as spies.
Quote:
"Plant one. Plant two guys on him. This could be very useful," says Nixon, who underlines that the security arrangement will end when the campaign does and then "If he gets shot, it's too damn bad."

I'm not so sure...he was still in the post-Chapaqudicick quagmire politically. I think any information they might have gotten would have been about other people and party members than about Kennedy himself. Digging up dirt, finding out what deals he made to get out of trouble and what he made to bury what would get him into trouble- stuff like that.

Teddy's brother had the FBI spy on MLK jr. Lots of that back then. Nixon was scum.

We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."

On a related note, about a year and a half ago I had the opportunity to sift through some amazing documents from the watergate scandal that were on their way to the National Archives. Pretty cool to see what the internal discussion was in his office when that stuff was going on. You wouldn't believe the level of Paranoia. The old Chief Counsel used to have his office swept for bugs weekly, right up until the late 90s.

I do recall reading and watching a program on the History channel that MLK was being spied on. Still Nixon was a moron.

They'll find out Randy can't run consistently anymore. He'll drive [Tom] Brady and [Bill] Belichick crazy. This is just my personal opinion from what I saw: He's losing his legs. He's becoming an old man fast.
