Sometimes folks want to transfer the mores of today on what happened yesterday, without the context of the events of the day, aka history.

In 1965 there was still a lot of suspicion about many folks, and then this upstart black guy was able to rally hundreds of thousands of people for his cause... it is what they did then, not that it was right... but the mood at the time was one of paranoia about the red menace and many folks who were out of the ordinary were spied on as they sought out ties to them commies.

Having J. Edgar as the head of the FBI, fed the paranoia and incensed the fires. He was not a big fan of the civil right movement or any of the movements of the 60's.. and easy answer then was to blame the commies. Up until his death in 1972 he was at the bottom of a whole bunch of crappy things going on.
