Newspapers' 2Q advertising sales plummet 29 percent, reducing revenue by $2.8B from last year

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Newspapers' financial woes worsened in the second quarter as advertising sales shrank by 29 percent, leaving publishers with $2.8 billion less revenue than they had at the same time last year.

It's the deepest downturn yet during a three-year free fall in advertising revenue -- newspapers' main source of income. The magnitude of the industry's advertising losses have intensified in each of the last 12 quarters.

The numbers released Thursday by the Newspaper Association of America weren't a shock, given the dramatic erosion mirrored the advertising losses that the largest U.S. newspaper publishers already had reported for the April-June period.

Stating the obvious, newspapers are done. Just like polaroid cameras. There's still a ton of need for "the news" just like there's a need for cameras but the format is finished. Kaput.

Newspapers are on the way out, but something will evolve in its place. It's a real shame, though, that newspapers are dying because they do a good job regulating state government. The Boston Globe has been extremely hard on Duval Patrick and on such issues as pension reform, questionnable personnel decisions, expensive renovatons in the gov's mansion, etc. Without newspapers, we have to hope that tv, the internet, or radio will step up to the plate.

A spokesman for the Sulzberger family -- speaking under promises of anonymity -- said today that the New York Times is warming quickly to the Studio 54 disco theme of the 70s as the latest idea to use mega-footage of unused space in the wildly HUGE new digs the Times built only a few years ago. The Sulzberger spokesperson said: "In an era that is reminding us more and more of the Jimmy Carter days of sky-rocketing inflation, exploding unemployment, and spiraling national debt, when the U.S. is being sold down the river to foreign powers and now tens of millions of illegal aliens are being invited across the border (to vote for free medical care, etc.), what better way to remember those wild and heady years than a retro-effect discotheque and a men-only public bath house!!! It's a sign of the (NY) Times!!!", said the unnamed spokesperson for Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr.

Print news is not finished. It is changing, even shrinking, but there will always be a need for it.

Outside your privileged, white, upper-class world, there are thousands of citizens (right in your community) who do not own a computer.

Just thumbing through the Boston Globe within a few minutes, here are the following things that people can NOT get on the Globe web site: Advertising sales flyers, coupons, crosswords, comics, community calendars, legal notices, up to date and edited court report.

Regardless, it never ceases to amaze me how dumb con men get when they trumpet the demise of newspapers. Dumb, because they honestly believe that because print news is shrinking, the individual news entity itself is going away.

Here's a newsflash, geniuses: If the New York Times drops it's very last printed edition on people's doorsteps, it's not going to stop it's online production of news. What don't you understand about that? It'll be edited by the same people, with the same journalistic standards that "lock it away, keep it secret" types like yourselves abhor. The stories will continue to be told, and your heroes will still be held accountable for starting wars based on lies, and unending class division that you all so fervently root for.
