Oliver Stone to Create 10-Part Documentary on 'Secret History of America'
[The controversial director is creating a 10-part documentary series for Showtime titled "Secret History of America."
Narrated by Stone, the series promises to focus on events that "at the time went under-reported, but crucially shaped America's unique and complex history of the last 60 years," according to Showtime.
Subjects will include President Harry Truman’s decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan, the origins of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, to "the fierce struggle between war and peace in America’s national security complex."]
Wouldn't hurt if he went back a few or several decades and included the genocide of a continent of Native Americans, while he's at it.

should be interesting, but also thoroughly fact-checked for Stone-isms...
i like the guy, and his bravery... his overall message is spot on.
there are three kinds of Americans, in my opinion:
- those who are oblivious to the criminal history of the U.S. empire
- those who are aware of it, but ultimately A-OK with it...
- and those who are disgusted by it, and spread awareness about it so that it's never forgotten.

Which criminal part of the empire. The one that ousted the indians. The one that enslaved blacks. The empire that allowed France to continue speaking French. How about the one that churned through immigrant workers during the industrial revolution. Seems to me like we all have a dog in the fight. Put me down for choice number two!

Why stop there? Why not go back to England and out everything bad that happened while we were still there...oh wait we weren't there...our ancestors were.

I think the period of time since we've become the most powerful country in the world is what's relevant here. The Empire time frame.
The past 60 years is quite sufficient. Let's not extrapolate too much.

But I see the point, we are terrible criminals who have never done any good and everything we are, do and standfor are bad. Does that sum it up?

I think Americans need a more realistic view of our own history. The "we are the moral light of the world" mentality ingrained into us from childhood, ends up being used for imperialistic/hegemonic ends globally.

mgcolby, it's lazy debate to have such a black or white, "with us or with the terrorists" outlook on U.S. morals ... no one said the U.S. doesn't do anything right or moral... but it's no "beacon of light"
