Not to split hairs, but while there is such a thing as a "self-hating Jew," I don't think that convenient assimilation such as you reference equate to a sort of people-wide stockholm syndrome.
There's very little identity lost by switching from "Shwartzstein" to "Blackstone," for example, given that one would only have swapped a German name for an English one. So, not quite the same thing as abandoning one's identity. Similarly, switching a -stam name to a -stein name when moving from the Pale to "civilized" Central Europe, in the same family some generations before, could not be very clearly identified as the abandonment of a Jewish identity for a German or Austrian one, then new to the family history.
That said, said moves make one stand out less rather than more, in the name of one's ethnic identification. I do not feel entitled to tell others how much or little of this practice is acceptable -- similarly I don't feel responsible to tell people of other ethnicities here what foods smell "good" or "bad" to me from their cuisine, nor do I demand they all eat hot dogs and hamburgers, or curse them for doing so.
Now the Black kid who writes racist screeds, that's another type of territory. Either as you insinuate a sort of Cosby-on-steroids reaction, or someone wishing to establish the holding of racist ideas among another group through use of anonymity. There are, however, members of your local police forces up there who could have provided the material for him with much less work, if he reads the letters to the editor.
Of course, this guy wanted to establish the presence of race-based racist death threats... which is not explicitly spelled out by the local Boston-area cop.
