Just saw it and was blown away. I'll be seeing it again sometime next week for sure.
One of the great things is that this is just a big slap in the face to Hollywood. They pump out crap high budget movies that are supposed to be block busters and this film with almost no recognizable actors and a small budget proves to be IMO the best movie so far this year.
Take Transformers 2...huge budget, popular actors and it sucked ass. District 9 has already surpassed its budget and now that word of mouth gets around this movie could make a lot.

They'll find out Randy can't run consistently anymore. He'll drive [Tom] Brady and [Bill] Belichick crazy. This is just my personal opinion from what I saw: He's losing his legs. He's becoming an old man fast.

I saw a synopsis of it a few days ago a completley different take on the whole alien genre. I believe i read the writer from South Africa really didn't intend to make any profound statement, it was the way things were around him as he grew up.
Maybe someone mentioned this on p2 and I haven't read it yet... but isn't this similar to Alien Nation? I enjoyed the hell out of that movie, and that whole series, by the way. But it looks like District 9 is to Apartheid what Alien Nation is to relatively integrated but racist society.

Liberals like Dickens, Zola, Flaubert, Shakespeare, Hemingway, Faulkner, Margaret Atwood, the entire Huxley family, E.M. Forrester... and don't forget Socialists like Orwell... yeah, just like peanut butter n jelly. We eat this stuff up, this fiction stuff.
So do you guys, but it's written by the Limbaughs, Coulters, and Becks of the world...
Difference is, when we're reading or watching fiction, we know it's fiction.

It about a space ship that runs out of fuel and gets stranded in South Africa. The aliens are put into a compound, they have no redeaming qualities, look like a cross between a lobster and a grasshopper. A bureau is created to take care of the situation. The situation ends up that the populace wants the aliens to move out into the hinter lands and are willing to use flame throwers etc. to make their point.
It gets more complicated but from what i read some of it is implausable, or unexplained.....i don't like that. One which i agree with is that WE want to get to know how to use the alien weapons because there so good, well if ther so good how did we defeat the aliens. Another that how they ran out of fuel is unxplained, thats not a big deal to me but gives some insight about the screen play. Anyways theres a review by Ebert on pg 1 thats pretty good. He can do better than me.
Well - via Hollywood, TPTB are surely conditioning the masses for SOMETHING. Isn't the 1980's "V" miniseries being made into a tv show, which airs next year?
From what I understand, this Maitreya figure is supposed to be this "one world teacher"(aka Antichrist) being anticipated by New Agers for a LONG time now. Recently, Benjamine Creme(Maitreya's long-time wicked John the Baptist, who's supposedly been communicating with him via telepathy) said how like 4 of these UFO-looking spaceships will be Maitreya's "ascended masters" after all these fan hitting the ceilings scenerios(i.e. economy crashing, another war, etc). And get this - the False Prophet will likely be called "Master Jesus"...NO JOKE! He's going to be this hippy-looking figure that's been seen for so many years in various churches. The reality of this is that the REAL Jesus Christ does NOT look anywhere near that picture we've seen - 1st Corinthians 11:14 (KJV), "Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?".
The Days of Noah had Nephilims and Giants - and the end times will be no different.
