They have been trying to divide and conquer the Taliban, holding meetings with some moderate Taliban (whatever that is). Perhaps the recent shooting between Taliban or the likely killing of a key Al Qaeda leader in Afghanistan are some of the fruits of this approach.
At any rate, I don't know what we should do about Afghanistan. After all, we went in there and artificially divided it into a relatively moderate country and radical one. If we left, our allies might be quickly wiped out by the far more violent and suicidal Taliban and Al Qaeda. In addition, given that the Taliban control half of Afghanistan, it seems plausible that Afghanistan is the best home base for terrorist operations. They do represent a serious threat. I think we need to stay and try to stabilize the situation before we can consider leaving.
