Scalia and Thomas are reliable conservative votes. For every justice, including the very liberal Stevens, I'm sure you can find the rare case where their Constitutional principles compel them to support a view they might personally hold.

In addition, logic tells me that on a conservative court, the conservatives can more easily railroad an opinion, while liberals need to be more nuanced in order to win over one of the conservatives. I would bet that when the court had a liberal majority, the conservatives tried to frame their opinions in a way that could win over one of the majority.

Actually the most independent SC Justice is Ginsburg... as she only sides with the majority 47% of the time..
Roberts, Alito and Thomas all side with the majority 72%
Scalia 76%
Kennedy 89%
Breyer 62%,
Souter 55%
Stevens 53% of the time

She is regarded as one of if not the most liberal justices on the bench, no way in hell she is the most independent justice. That title belongs to the moderate Kennedy.

Take a look at one of the tables in there and their "tends to agree" table and it's more likely Kennedy is the most independent as he has agreed each of the other justices more than half the time on non-unanimous cases. Every other justice is below 50% agreement with at least two justices, Ginsburg being in agreement with just four over 50% of the time.

.... not because she's "independent"; it's because she's WRONG all the time. She is a waste of a seat on the Supremes. 100% counter-productive, a fly in the ointment.

Idiotic comment from the guy who called these the guys in robes who sit in a salon.. your song is getting tired. If you view the justice system decisions as right and wrong, you will always be the latter. Remember your well thougt out comments on the Supreme Court.. does not sound like you can even envision any gray in this whole process, as you do not value it..

Hoss manure. Just because a bunch of black robes sitting in some politically correct salon somewhere beyond the reach of the common man makes some dumb-azz decision about a whining little ACLU-prompted cry-baby does not make it the "holy grail" of the U.S. Constitution.

And you still have the balls to complain about people flaming people...do as you say not as you do

You missed a golden opportunity to shut him up with a reply that strengthens your stance but you don't do that, you take the low road you have railed against for the last week+

Some day, when you are all grown up, you will understand that there are some things in life that are not "gray". Faith, morality, freedom of conscience .... all of these things Ginzburg has fought against in her too long stay with the Supremes, with her incessant fixation with social engineering. Better she retire now to limit any further harm she does.

I notice you left out anything about the Constitution and law, but that is not important to you. "Social Engineering" is that the hysterical buzzword of the day.
