Default Bankrupt USA losing influence: Kyrgyzstan rejects U.S. Base

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/12/wo.../12kyrgyz.html

George Bush's disastrous 8-year regime has bankrupted America's credibility and coffer.

And it doesn't help that Barack Obama is pushing us deeper into the hole.

Time for Obama to step up and show some leadership on this issue. Bush did in 2006.

From an equally biased source..

Aram Roston: Kyrgyzstan: Bush-era Deal with a Central Asian Ruler May Come Back to Haunt Afghan Campaign

Quote:
A potential logistical setback for the efforts in Afghanistan can perhaps be traced back to a tangled Bush-era alliance that enriched the family of a dictator in Central Asia

The Kyrgyz decision to close the base has been blamed mainly on Russian influence, but at the heart of the disagreement is actually money, as the Kyrgyz government has repeatedly made clear. The impoverished Kyrgyz government, which took over after the toppling of President Askar Akaev in 2005, has been complaining since 2006 about the base deal.

The Russians are giving them something like $2 Billion. So if the US wants to give them $2.5 Billion, then you'll get yourselves a base maybe. I say maybe, cuz after the Georgia invasion, do you think a country in that region wants to disappoint the Ruskies? Probably not.

Maybe the Khyrgs can get Scott Borris to be their agent in the bidding war. If they play the Reds against the Yankees who knows how high the bidding will go?

WHEW!
That was close!

U.S., Kyrgyzstan reach deal on air base - South and Central Asia- msnbc.com

U.S. forces in February had been ordered out of the Manas air base by a presidential decree that stunned Washington and drew suspicion that Kyrgyzstan was acting under the influence of Russia, which staunchly opposes Western military presence near its borders. Russia also has a base in Kyrgyzstan.

But the deal approved Tuesday by a Kyrgyz parliamentary committee apparently would allow the American base to remain open and continue to be used by U.S. forces to transport weaponry and ammunition. That should provide a much-needed boost as the U.S.-led coalition ramps up its military operations against Taliban and al-Qaida fighters in Afghanistan.

"The deal's biggest change is likely to be the cost — more than three times the current $17.4 million annual rent for the base. ..."

We musta had Scott Burris as an agent.
