For a gay kid growing up in a community or family that rejects gays or regards it as a sickness, having the government acknowledge that it's nothing to be ashamed of can be helpful. I think that's one of the reasons the government acknowledges many days and months as celebrating a particular culture, race, gender, etc. Bush issues a Sanctity of Life proclamation, one for African American history, and as Governor even issues a proclamation honoring Jesus Day.

This issue is another example of the right-wing working against minorities to rally its troops and win over a few others.

I disagree. The government has no authority or instruction to declare any "______ Day" or "_________Month". It's a waste of time and effort and it has nothing to do with black or gay people in my case. We're in a *****storm economically and Obama needs to demonstrate that he's on this 24-7.

Last week he turned down an invite from the French President for a get-together, but Obama declined saying that he has too much work to do and he doesn't even have time for his wife when he wants to. In light of comments like that, this or any other such "declaration" seems idiotic- that's all.

I bet very few if any gay kids who are getting crapped on by their family or peers will see this as any relief. Their country and family are not behind them for the most part, and that sucks. This does nothing but looks gratuitous. I'd be insulted by this Obama declaration if I were gay because Obama himself has said that civil unions are sufficient for gays.

When I was 16, I would turn to the New York Times book review every Sunday because The Advocate (a gay news magazine) ran an ad that said, "Hey, it's okay to be gay." It meant a great deal to me. Although gay kids today are far better off than they were in my day, there are still many living in small communities and suffering from shame and fear. I think you're underestimating what some kids go through -- especially kids from dogmatic homes. As far as Obama and civil unions go, I really don't believe him, but believe he's simply playing politics because the decision will be decided at the Supreme Court or state level. I think he's for gay marriage. Nonetheless, I'm troubled that he still hasn't taken steps on Don't Ask/Don't Tell.

And I think Harry wielding cane is enough to scare off any homophobe!
