Moneynews - Obama: Raise Death Tax to Pay for Healthcare

The Obama administration proposed on Monday to raise nearly $60 billion by closing loopholes including those related to the estate tax, and also revived a bid to cap deductions wealthy individuals can claim.

Funds raised from the estate tax and other changes would go to beef up a healthcare reserve fund, a $634 billion pot of money President Barack Obama wants to use to revamp the healthcare system and expand insurance to tens of millions of Americans who lack it.

The White House wants to raise $24 billion over 10 years by tightening rules for the estate tax, a levy on the portion of inheritance that exceeds an amount excluded by law.

Currently, the first $3.5 million of an individual's inheritance and $7 million of a couple's inheritance are exempted. The Obama administration would change how assets are valued.

The official acknowledged opposition among lawmakers but said Congress is going to need to find money from somewhere for its ambitious agenda and to impose fiscal discipline.

I don't like Obama universal health care because it costs too much. This is the first time in US history we are taxed LEFT and RIGHT.

There is no such thing as a "Death Tax." Once you're dead, you don't own anything, nor do you need anything.

There is such a thing as an "Estate Tax," which partially interrupts the process of creating "silver spoon" existences for worthless pukes with the good fortune to be born to wealthy parents.

To raise it to 100% with no floor to the amount of the estate would be scandalous. It would create instant poverty for widows and orphans.

To raise it by a percentage on estates over a certain amount ($3.5 mill is a pretty hefty chunk of change) would be good public policy.

The devil is, as always, in the details.

This will be self fulfilling, his crappy healthcare will lead to shorter lifespans which will reduce health costs and get the death tax money in quicker. He's brilliant

Whatever I have left I plan to leave as I see fit, not as you see fit, thank you very much. If my sons are deserving they get it; if not charities will. Either way it's none of your business.

I just hate the fact that you want your kids to have money and Obama walks in and takes it away.

I consider Obama's death tax to be 'stealing'. Obama sounds like a communist and socialist.

I have NEVER seen a tax system such as Obama's ones. We will end up having NOTHING in the end.

There is no reason for us to work hard when we have nothing in the end. Obama is a thief.

If I cannot afford to die then I will sue the federal government to make them keep me alive.
