British Prime Minister Gordon Brown lost his fourth minister within 24 hours on Wednesday as he faced taunts that his government was in meltdown on the eve of polls which could seal his fate.

Amid talk that the wave of resignations may be the beginning of the end of his premiership, Brown faced a rowdy Prime Minister's Questions session at which Conservative leader David Cameron urged a snap general election.

"The government is collapsing before our eyes," said Cameron, tipped by opinion polls to be elected as premier within a year.

"Why doesn't he take the one act of authority left to him: get down to the palace, ask for a dissolution (of parliament), call that election?"

Nick Clegg -- leader of the second opposition Liberal Democrats -- said Brown's Labour Party was "in total meltdown".

one of my Brit coworkers just infomed me of the pariament's ability to call for immediate elections....I guess thats whats happening in this case. Keep an eye on this situation over the next few days.


The representative government over there is so interesting to watch. The debate in parliament is fascinating. Everytime I see a session, I wish we had open debate like that.

They put a bunch of rejects in power, who like big nanny gubmit, cuz it allowed then to write off porno movies, on the taxpayers dime. When the polls came out and said "well, this is how's it's always been", that didn't go over too well. I say good riddance. Politicians are elected to office to serve the people, and not the other way around. Imagine getting reimbursed for porno's!?!

That's not actually happening...they are bound to have an election no later than next June anyway(at most five years after last elections, last was June of '05). All that is going on is the leader of the opposition is acting on ill will and bad news to try to swing a favorable election time frame. To relate it to the US it would be like Steny Hoyer calling for new elections after Nancy Pelosi's recent CIA problem...

Frankly it is classic politicking by the head of the opposition. If he didn't do that he'd risk his party not gaining momentum vs. Brown's party and Brown retaining the majority and thus the Prime Minister's job. Then again Brown does hold a nice 66 member cushion so he might be able to afford losing a couple of people to the election and remain in power.

I doubt anything comes of it yet...he has plenty of time to wait for this to blow over and if he's as good as Blair was six years ago when he faced a similar problem with people leaving due to controversial actions it should be all right in the elections for his party.

CSPAN might have better viewership if we had that kind of hecking and insulting and constant battles for the best witty remarks and one liners

The debates are always worth a laugh, especially watching Brown continue to make an ass of himself. Theres several clips on youtube.
