Correct, but they and other groups opposed to this pumped tons of cash into defeating this proposal.. as in most of these things the side with the most money and best media is often the winner. Give credit where credit is due, they did a good job jamming the airwaves and making the vote happen.

There are those that would say that will is right.
A government for the people and by the people.
Why are the Mormons being blamed when California itself said that the Black Community are the ones that had the courage to defy 'Political Correctness' and vote as they saw it, I commend the Black Community and their Religious Leaders for standing up for what they belive in "right or wrong" thats American democracy & freedom, The Will Of The People.

The Court is supposed to interpret the constitution and subsequent law, not the will of the people.. that is one of the reasons why there are three branches of gov't..
The Mormons aren't being blamed, but they were major financial backers to the advertising that led to the defeat.. the blacks did not do it by themselves..
Donors supporting Prop. 8
Some of the donors supporting Prop 8 were:
Knights of Columbus, $1,400,000.[36] [37]
Howard Ahmanson, $1,150,000.
John Templeton, $900,000.
National Organization for Marriage, $785,750.[38]
Elsa Prince, $650,000.
Fieldstead & Company, $600,000.
American Family Association, $500,000
Focus on the Family, $411,000.
Doug Manchester, $125,000.[39]
One group that opposed Proposition 8 focused attention on the contributions to the pro-Proposition 8 campaign from individuals who belong to the Mormon church. Contributions from Mormons were said to amount to between 33%-40% of the total amount raised in support of Proposition 8.[40]
Mormons such as the Pattersons have emerged as the leading financial contributors to the controversial Nov. 4 ballot measure. Church members have donated about 40 percent of the $22.8 million raised to pass the initiative since July, according to Frank Schubert, campaign manager for ProtectMarriage.com, the primary backer of the "yes" campaign.
Other religious groups have contributed, including a Catholic fraternal service organization – the Knights of Columbus – which donated more than $1 million. But no group has given more than the Mormons.

Interesting partial interview I caught on NPR on the way to work this morning-A gay woman was pondering how California could possibly vote down gay marriage on the same day they voted in Obama. I guess there are a lot of people in denial about the current mood of the populace on gay marriage. Obama is black and defines marriage between one man and one woman(though some here say he's "equivocating which is just deflection away from using the word "lying" in my book) The California Black Community agrees, yet so many were shocked at the outcome. LOL they were so confused they marched on white churches I guess out of some kind of stereotypical instinct.

They may have advertised, but who cares. People advertise for lots a crap. They plain simple truth is, whether we like it of not.
Til that changes, not a whole lot of progress is gonna be made on the subject. When put to the will of the people (including blacks, Mormons, and whoever else) this issue is not very close yet........ Feel from to blame whatever group you want, but the bottom line, most people arn't ready yet for this. Read the poll though, its interesting in that when asked the question "Should gays and lesbians be afforded equal protection as straights couples" the result switch almost exactly with 56% in support.

I don't mean this as a putdown on Homosexuality, what I am trying to get at is the workings of the Liberal Brain, can a liberal on here solve this for me for Christ Sake.
Something I have always wondered about, most all left wing liberals support, defend and are always very careful to be politically correct when speaking about the subject of homosexuality they are always telling anybody that will listen how normal it is and we should not be homophobic or show any type of bigotry towards Homosexuals.
Now the question, Liberals hate J Edgar Hoover, when they want to insult, degrade and besmirch Hoover why do they call him a Homosexual, doesn't calling somebody you want to insult and degrade a Homosexual mean that you think Homosexuality is bad---------------

Good point.
Is the real problem in this debate that the government is administering 'marriages" when they have no business doing so? (rhetorical)
