Re: Yes, WE CAN BELIEVE !!!!!!!
What the right wing fringe thinks is appropriate is not shared by most Americans. What the right wing fringe thinks is Socialism, is basically market capitalism with a social safety net. National health care is not Socialism. The fact that you pay taxes and receive services is not Socialism. If you like moving the goal posts up 50 yards and saying you got a TD because you made it from the 40 to the 50, then SCORE!
If you're living in the real world, what M. Obama said in your quote is absolutely accurate. I don't want that much -- do you? I am in my 40s and live in a duplex condo. Quite pleasant actually. I know a lot of people who live similarly, or in townhouses way out in the exurbs, but of course they have a longer commute. I simply don't expect the "prosperity" represented by materialist overkill. I don't mind doing well, but I'm not going to grind my teeth at night that I can't get a new car every year because I have to help support the poor. Most people I know, right and left, think similarly -- with the exception of far right idealists. For them it's a "matter of principal" that the poor live in heinous conditions.
Get a grip. Americans by and large like the idea that our country can have a certain floor to its citizens wellbeing, below which we don't let them sink. Simply put, nobody rejoices (well maybe the right wingers but nobody I know,) when they pass by the homeless -- whether they cough up a couple of quarters or not.
I know we have a high proportion here of enraged haters who still can't get over Obama living. There's a hard core that's going to take a long time to get it, and they'll continue to grasp at any next straw that suggests to them that our last election was a terrible, terrible mistake. They're eight years late.
I expect to hear and tune out this sort of whining for a long, long time. From your point of view, my friend, America is a center left nation.
