I'll start with my personal opinion. Absolutely not.

What got me thinking of this topic is an article I read in today's Boston Globe.

Here's a little tidbit from the article;

"Until his final year of high school, Filipe fit right in.

A strong student at one of Boston's best schools, he excelled in sports and won a scholarship to state colleges because of his high test scores. He liked rock 'n' roll, video games, and the Red Sox. He spoke English like an American, with barely a hint of an accent.

Then he graduated, and all the doors closed. He couldn't claim his scholarship, a state college charged him the pricey nonresident tuition, and financial aid was unavailable to him.

The reason: Filipe is an illegal immigrant.

Across America, Filipe and students like him are welcomed into the public school system by a narrow 1982 Supreme Court ruling that guarantees them a basic education, regardless of their immigration status. After graduation, for those who want to attend college, the rules dramatically change."

If you read the article, it's obvious the Globe takes a position supporting such scholarships to illegal immigrants.

It baffles me as to why they would take such a position. The question here is should OUR tax dollars send an illegal immigrant to college INSTEAD of a U.S. citizen? How can that even be discussed? Are we supposed to feel sorry for someone like Filipe who knows from the time he enters high school that illegal immigrants aren't eligible for college sholarships?

Secondly, if we are to discuss this issue, what would stop us from allowing illegal immigrants to be eligible to receive the benefits of other social programs? Isn't America for Americans first?

It would only suprise me if the globe came out against benefits for illegal immigrants

So a kid from RI a US citizen pays out of state tuition, but Dems believe a kid here illegally from Countyr X should get instate tuition and scholarships?

Meanwhile Obama was cut aid to states who are holding illegal aliens (which is the job of the feds), so illegal aliens will be released rather than deported.

The illegal aliens will also get subsidized (free) health care under Obama's healthplan, welcome to the dem future.

I prefer the Globe to the rag called the Herald and often agree with their OpEd's...and I often disagree with them as well.

But this one just has no rational basis. There isn't a single reason to give illegal immigrants a scholarship....NONE.

I sure hope this kid speaks Portuguese if we're gonna be kicking him out of the only home he's known since he was what maybe 11?

I wouldn't call it racism though, more like a near total lack of compassion or empathy.

Children should not be punished for the actions of their parents. That has been my view of illegal immigration for some time now. While I think the borders need to be stronger I also feel we should treat the illegal minors as legal citizens when they become adults and/or finish high school. They should be mandated to become citizens at that point with no repercussions. They should have to undergo the citizenship process and they should be able to read, write and speak English. An educated America is a stronger America ... legal or illegal IMO.
