Yeah, but they didn't publish any such story. Regardless of the truth of the matter, if a sitting Boston City Councilman rants and raves about 'proof' of US GI's raping Iraqi women, the Boston media is obliged to report it. IE it was a story simply because Turner had got behind it. It wasn't some loon on the corner stating this. Now, if you read the article that went with the pictures its clearly spelled out that there was no insignia or medals or even name tags on the "soldiers'" uniforms that would establish they were affiliated with the US military or any indication of where they were. All the Globe ever called them was men wearing camo uniforms.

The Herald and the Globe are both slanted in opposite directions.
Everyone knows that.
It's bad for a city like Boston to have only one paper. Maybe society is shifting away from using newspapers in general and we'll soon see the end of the Herald, too. Not maybe...definitely.

When you only serve less than half of the population, these things are going to happen. Funny how an ultra left-wing company like the NY Times very first move is the go after the union workers (I'm sure all of the AFL-CIO members are really happy now that their union only supports the left).
Most uions are extremely top heavy and care much more about getting democrats elected than the health and welfare of their respective memberships, so they are quickly gonig the way of the dinosaur.
If it were not for the SPorts pages, I would never go to the Globe site. If the front page says that the sky is blue, you have to go outside and double check it for yourself. They have become a mouthpiece for the left, and as such, their readers have dwindled.
This is nobody's fault aside from the very peope that are being effected, the NY TImes, the Globe, and their union workers, their is an old adage, you reap what you sow, enjoy it!

The New York Times Co. has threatened to shut the Boston Globe unless the newspaper's unions swiftly agree to $20 million in concessions, union leaders said.
Executives from the Times Co. and Globe made the demands Thursday morning in an approximately 90- minute meeting with leaders of the newspaper's 13 unions, union officials said. The possible concessions include pay cuts, the end of pension contributions by the company and the elimination of lifetime job guarantees now enjoyed by some veteran employees, said Daniel Totten, president of the Boston Newspaper Guild, the Globe's biggest union, which represents more than 700 editorial, advertising and business office employees.
The concessions will be negotiated individually with each of the unions, said Totten and Ralph Giallanella, secretary-treasurer of the Teamsters Local 259, which represents about 200 drivers who deliver the newspaper.
"We all know the newspaper industry is going through great transition and loss," said Giallanella. "The ad revenues have fallen off the cliff. Just based on everything that's going on around the country, they're serious."
I don't think this has anything to do with Democracy, except perhaps in terms of fallout. It's more an issue of economics and the simple fact that the heyday of responsible newspaper (aka tabloidless) publishing has passed. The unions are necessary to protect the rank-and-file from greedy business owners, but it is unecessary and unresponsible for these same unions to take the position that anything but healthy pay raises is a must, otherwise they only succeed in speeding up the demise of the businesses they unionized over in the first place. That $20 million is probably what it is after years of refusing necessary concessions to help keep the Globe strong enough to survive.

The Globe should had shown some integrity and also told the readers that the alleged "rape" photos were identified as coming from an internet porn site. This fact was known a week prior in media circles.

Well, it started out as a decent thread... That is, until the resident battlestar galactica nerd, the cultist, and the jail 'em all moderator showed up to offer their unsolicited partisan swipes, for no apparent reason than to start shyt. It's what they do.
Please don't sit here and pretend the unions forced this issue, or that the "liberal" media is somehow "reaping what is has sown." Could you be more pretentious?
Newspapers are dying because they're losing ad revenue to the internet (Craig's List, first and foremost) during a serious economic downturn. Not because of any perceived ideology. I've seen the books. It's not the unions that are hurting the bottom line. Most papers were doing just fine until the recession.
Here's a newsflash: The Herald just laid off dozens, and more are rumored to be coming. In fact, some people believe Murdoch is positioning himself to buy the Globe and scrap the Herald altogether.

Now that would be a damn shame. I'm biased of course, but I think the Globe is one of the best newspapers in the country. I love that paper. The Herald is just trash.
