Default President Obama to Sign Executive Order on Stem Cell Research Monday

March 06, 2009 3:44 PM

ABC News has learned that on Monday morning President Obama will hold an event at the White House in which he signs an executive order overturning the ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.

The announcement will be about "restoring scientific integrity to health care policy," an administration official tells ABC News.

In August 2001, President George W. Bush signed an executive order banning federal funding on embryonic stem cell research except for a few dozen lines that were grandfathered in. The White House at the time estimated scientists would have more than 60 cell lines to use, but ultimately fewer than two dozen lines were usable.

We passed some bond measure here in CA for several billion in funding for this . . . still waiting for the magic cures.

I am in favor of this but it's way overplayed that Bush banned it (he didn't) and that there is some history of success (there isn't).

This is Great news. The country can now move into the 21st century. For to long oh 20 out of the last 28 years America has been held hostage to religious dogma controlling the countries agenda. Especially when it came to science.

Jersey has spend > a billion on this with no results. Meanwhile they won't fund non embroyonic stem cell research which has produced results.

"How does (Miami-Ohio offensive lineman Brandon) Brooks not get invited to the combine? How did Vollmer not get invited to the combine? I don't know. We can't really worry about that. We just have to try to evaluate them the best we can."

Keep your fingers crossed....hope there will be some fruit from this.
There are so many lives in the balance. Why would anyone be against research into new processes when none of the old ones have produced a cure for anything. What the hell is wrong with you, BF and PF13?

Dude, read what I wrote. I am IN FAVOR of it. Note my initial reply.

However I get tired of 1) those who act like Bush BANNED it when he didn't and when BILLIONS of dollars have been approved for it and 2) the fact that no-one is willing to admit that embryonic stem cell research has never cured anything. That doesn't mean it never will but those in favor should be more realistic about the expectations.

Will some people be cured and out of their wheelchairs by Monday afternoon?

Just another waste of money.

Stupid question, and very wrong. But then, you're opposed on religious grounds if I'm not mistaken.

REAL stupid question. Shows a basic lack of understanding - even rejection- of the scientific process. How ignorant can one get? WOW!...
