Default Obama's slip

America did not "invent" the automobile as Obama suggested last night - Rather German inventor Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler came out with the internal combustion engine. Ford just rolled out his mass produced Model T years later...

I think one can forgive a President for taking a very pro-American view.

The Associated Press: FACT CHECK: Obama's words on home aid ring hollow

OBAMA: "And I believe the nation that invented the automobile cannot walk away from it."

THE FACTS: Depends what your definition of automobiles, is. According to the Library of Congress, the inventor of the first true automobile was probably Germany's Karl Benz, who created the first auto powered by an internal combustion gasoline engine, in 1885 or 1886. In the U.S., Charles Duryea tested what library researchers called the first successful gas-powered car in 1893. Nobody disputes that Henry Ford created the first assembly line that made cars affordable.

.... especially if it panders shamelessly to one of his hard-core constituencies, the labor unions. Eh??

It was a calculated inaccuracy geared towards good oratory and good oratory from the holder of that particular office can make a big difference. Complaining about it is about the same as saying FDR was lying when he said that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself. Its not like Cancer, or getting run over by a bus, or choking to death on a pretzel suddenly went away when FDR said his words.

That's right. And a Trillion here, a trillion there; pretty soon we're talking about some *real* money!

Thank goodness for the attitude of Americans like you. Without it, we wouldn't be in the mess we're in now.

You better tell that to my parents, brother, sisters, grand-parent, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws. Oh, and my passport, too. They all think I'm still American.

Not that Lithuania isn't cool. (Actually, it's *very* cool. Please Algore here, would you? )
