The father is the primary cause for this, that kid should never have been allowed to keep that gun in his room, the father is lucky the kid didn't kill him too.
As you know I am an old time flaming righty, so I believe there is another factor in this "The *****, the Violence, the Sucking and F--king, the Crap Music, the Killer Movies and the steady stream of violence that kids are subjected to in todays "Wonderful Diverse Feel Good Fredom Society" maybe the kid was just trying to be "COOL"
