Prior to Roosevelt's policies, we were always in and out of recession. From 1902 to 1927 (25 years) there are about 10 years of recession interposed. Only after the New Deal, did the number and length of recessions start declining. In fact, since 1940, we still haven't had a combined 10 years of recession. Big government is not necessarily good for the economy, but it's good for the people.

The New Deal prolonged the Depression it did not end it. The unemployment after 8 years of Roosevelt's policies was 19%. WW2 ended the great depression not socailist policies and big government programs.
Just bo's policies will prolong this recession.

Smoot/Hawley prolonged the depression. The New Deal helped people survive it. It may very well have saved capitalism in the United States, or at least prevented us from a horrible, many-decade dip into actual communism, which would have brought immeasurably more suffering.

What is it about the war that let us out? I'm not seeing how a temporary absence of millions of our younger, able-bodied male citizens could have done it. What's left besides government spending on a massive scale?
