You can't collect if you're fired. That being said, there are people who prefer to be laid off, and collect for 1-2 years, instead of actually working. Extending unemployment benefits too quickly is always a bad move. People get lazy, and take the money to stay home. Obviously not everyone, but most people without dependents do. People in the blue collar field especially like extended collecting, cuz they can work for cash on a day to day basis. In more difficult, or slower times, contractors almost prefer the ability to hire a guy or two, day to day, for cash, since it means no insurance, no payroll taxes, and no obligations beyond that work day. Residential clients don't mind paying in cash either, since it tends to save them 10-20% off the legitimate, pay by check price. Think about it, if tens of millions of illegals can work in this country without recourse, then why wouldn't actual legal residents be able to do the same, while collecting? Extending benefits is necessary, and I wouldn't say that it's not. I'm just pointing out the fact that extending them so early, or too often, does have negative ramifications too.
The recession has been going on for 14 months now. Define "early".

"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him." Leo Tolstoy, 1897
BTW, and I'm surprised that I have to even state this, but my post above is not an anti-benefits position. I'm merely trying to offer some prospective on them, for people who might not otherwise know. Of course, anything said that is viewed as a negative of the current policy, or more so anything I post, is eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil to some people.

•Lengthen the period in which people can be eligible for extended unemployment benefits. The program, which provides up to 33 weeks of extra jobless benefits after workers exhaust the regular 26 weeks received in most states, was passed last year and was set to expire at the end of March. Under the stimulus bill, the extended benefits would be available through the end of 2009. The NELP estimates this will help about 3 million people.
UEB's were already extended last year, when BOOOOOOOOOOOOOSH was still president. They went from the original 26 weeks, to 39, to 46, to a whopping +33 weeks beyond the original contract. Now we're adding to that. Benefits are absolutely a good thing overall. My only point is that there are people, and a sizable amount too, who prefer to get 60% or so of their pay, to stay home. A friend my mine who is an electrician, and lives at home, is loving this. He's got the summer off to go to the beach, and has side jobs to supplement his lost income. When I was working outside on the job, I used to get tons of people looking for work, cuz their unemployment were ready to end. This is all I was trying to point out. That extending them too early, isn't always wise, cuz lots of people won't bother looking for a job, when they can take the summer off. I know this might sound unbelievable to some posters in here, but there are lazy people in this people. Haven't any of you ever listened to your wives when the Patriots are playing, and you're comatose on the couch? Well, nevermind. Who the heck listens to their wife. My bad!

A little sensitive today? I wasn't complaining at all. Just wanted to know what you considered "early" since you used the term several times qualifying when you feel it is appropriate to introduce longer unemployment benefits.
Calm down, Champ.

Early is usually when I like to have my first drink.

RW's right to a certain extent. I'm competing with a lot of laid off union flooring installers (as usual) during this particular slowdown. Its cute, these union guys go on and on about how they make 40 or 50 or 60 dollars an hour between pay and benefits, then they get out into the non-union world with no knowledge of how to bid a job since they don't participate in estimating in their regular jobs, and end up submitting bids that leave them making $10 an hour or sometimes much less. Then they wonder how it is that us non-union guys can live on such a crappy wage
