Absolutely true. But the best guess, the most likely way to fullfil the will of the people is to pick someone from the same party, D or R.

Its of little consequence either way. Reid won't have too much trouble peeling off one Republican or another if the vote's close and the stage is set for another Republican slaughter in 2010. Next figure on the Dems riding Obama's coat-tails in 2012, which means the R's really don't have much of a shot at gaining seats until 2014.

As much as I would like to share your optimism, the great economic unknown may derail any plans of the Dems... have to wonder how long people can hold out as there is no good economic news on the horizon..

I think when a senator/congressman moves on or gets removed, there should always be a special election, not appointed by a governor. I am sure what Blago did is the norm and not a one time case. He was just dumb enough to get caught.

I completely agree with that. In theory, an incoming president could pick nothing but Senators or Reps (depending on what he needs more) to change the makeop of Congress. I always though it was strange -even when I was a kid in school learning about the government in Social Studies - to have a Senator appointed by a governor.

Better yet, let the governor appoint a temporary replacement (from the same party as the outgoing Congressman) while the special election is held so that no state is poorly represented and the voters have who they want for the remainder of the term. Don't forget that Senators have a 6-year term. That's a long time!

It's Bonnie Newman (R). Googled her but didn't see anything glaring, looks well qualified. Anyone from N.H. have any knowledge of her.
