Actually I have not seen a lot of attacks on Steele. I have seen a lot of whining about anticipated attacks on Steele.
Yes, there will be some analysis of if skin color was a factor in his selection so the person with the job of critic-in-chief is also an African American.
First off, Rice was not the first black secretary of state. She was not even the first black secretary of state in the Bush administration. Your lack of knowledge of current events is shocking.
Rice has been criticized for our nation going from having the support of our allies to losing it, because of America's go it alone foreign policy. Not her skin color.
Thomas is disliked because he is an idiot. I disagree with Scalia almost as often as I disagree with Thomas. But Scalia's opinion actual have a logical basis. The difference between Scalia and Thomas is like the difference between George Will and Rush Limbaugh. I won't agree with any of them. But there is some intelligence behind what they write. Probably the same way a conservative might view David Broder vs Micheal Moore. And his appointment was clearly race based. Bush set out to find a far right conservative black judge and the pool of talent did not exist.
And I don't like Dungy and his pompous self righteousness. I was rooting for Lovie Smith to be the first black coach to win the SB!

Michael Steele is a solid CONSERVATIVE and has been the choice of Rush and Coulter.
Regardless of race.

Dungy (black NFL coaches): Don't really like his holier then now attitude. Do like Lovie Smith. Singletary is good (tho, didn't like his attitude of threatening fans during the strike when he was a player).
Obama: voted for him, like him.
Rice: If there was one person who should have been fired for 9/11, it was her. The most powerful person on the 9/11 commission which basically cleared her, was hired by her after the commission's obligation was filled.
Steele: Have always liked him, never heard him say anything outrageous which is the first turn-off of any politician.
Thomas: Never liked the guy, just as I've never liked Scalia. It appears that he also lied to congress in his sworn testimony regarding the sexual harassment charges. But hey, he's only a Supreme Court Justice.

When I started doing firsts I was going to include gender since Palin was brought up earlier as another point of ridicule for the "damned if you do and damned if you don't republican party" so Rice was the first female secretary of state and Palin was the first female republican vice presidential candidate. I should have said first black female secretary of state but had decided to leave gender out of it. Please give me credit for knowing Powell was secretary of state (wow, two black secretaries of state in the racist party). I guess the now respected Obama supporting Powell was just a token appointment for Bush since he obviously had no resume worthy for the job back then. Now of course he'd be a brilliant choice for any Democratic position.
Sooner or later(probably sooner)there will be all kinds of things to complain about Steele for and that will only "prove" that he was chosen simply because he was black to try and fool everyone since he obviously has no credentials worthy of the position. In this age of affirmative action, I'd think the left would be applauding the appointment
Seriously there was at least one person on this board that proudly proclaimed that the main reason he was voting for Obama was because he was black. I agree with you on Dungy, but that's beside the point.
The Magic Negro episode was embarrassing and should be condemned whether you buy into the comedic angle or not. It was just plain dumb and the RNC has said as much but for some of you the RNC has never done anything any good it never will. The ridicule of the Steele appointment says it all.

Not correct. That would be Madeleine Albright.
As for Powell. I supported his nomination. In 2001 I stated there are only two people in the Bush administration I really liked Rice and Powell. (and it had nothing to do with race, they are the only two I thought had a brain)
My opinion of both have changed Powell primarily because of him lacking the balls to standup the the president on WMD. Rice because of her obstructionistic behavior with the 911 commission.

The only transparency in the GOP is in its strategy, and this selection is one more example of that fact. It's a joke. The RNC gets caught red-handed BEING insensitive, then tried to explain to everybody how they need a sense of humor, then says "look we fixed it!" You really think without the "Barack the Magic Negro" CD, that the selection would have been the same?
Hey, perhaps so. Perhaps not. I can't tell you what the GOP "woulda coulda shoulda" done, but I can tell you how this looks from the POV of a non-Republican. Cynical and transparent.
Still -- it is a gesture. It is the GOP trying to display a new direction, and that will be enough for some. I think the move does buy a tiny bit of redemption.
As tokenism, it will ultimately fail; if it is rather a harbinger of a new direction for the GOP, however, it will be the unexpected beginning of a comeback story.
We will see.

Well at least you admit your cynicism and allow for the possibility that the RNC has a new direction. That's a little refreshing. FYI I have never complained about birth certificates, relatives or smoking and personally I hope Obama is so successful that I can't wait to vote for him again. As a to the right of center individual I do route for the republican party to get it's act together to keep a check and balance alive in Washington....not gridlock or partisan lockdown mind you that you just saw in the House. Actually Obama was critical of that and without naming names spanked Pelosi a bit for her attitude. Refreshing as well.

My opinion of both have changed because it is clear neither had the balls to tell the president when he was doing stupid.
I meant black female secretary of state, but I think you knew that since later in the same paragraph I pointed that out.............Africa is a county too ;-)

Winner winner chicken dinner.
The left is supportive of women and minorities. Women and minorities that follow the same ideology that they do.
