Apparently the money that went to pay for these TV's, came from a "canteen" fund that is actually paid into by the inmates. Now, I don't know the particulars of this canteen fund, and how it's set up, but supposedly it's not taxpayer money. That of course could mean that the program itself is paid for with TP money, but that the revenues it collects are not. With all that in mind, I can't comprehend how someone thought it wasa good idea to buy HDTV's for inmates. Even if it's not taxpayer money, does this mean we could hire strippers for some inmates birthday?

This is redonculous, we should be keeping our prisoners fed, and give them access to education and rehabilitation programs. I do know this, a lot of peeps have been throwing out their tube TVs for flat screens over the last few years. Heck ...the other day I passed three 50plus inch tube TVs just lying on the street here in SF. They last abouut three to 4 weeks on the sidewalk...why not recycle the tube TVs to the inmates?
saves money on landfull, and we could probably use the $77,000 for something that would improve our society.....Like educating children, or afterschool programs.

The canteen fund is either money put into the inmates accounts from working or by their family. So these guy's paid for their own TV's. Better to give them something to do than have them idle. People can think of the tv as an electronic pacifyer.
