REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Iceland is set to appoint the world's first openly gay woman as interim prime minister — a former flight attendant who rose through the political ranks to become a cabinet minister.
Johanna Sigurdardottir, the island nation's 66-year-old social affairs minister, is the pick of the Social Democratic Alliance Party to lead an interm government.
Iceland's conservative-led government failed Monday, after the country's banks collapsed in the fall under the weight of huge debts amassed during years of rapid economic growth. The country's currency has plummeted, while inflation and unemployment are soaring.

That's really amazing. A black president here, a gay woman prime minister there. It's amazing to see intolerance crumble. Let's hope it keeps happening.

Not sure I understand Icelandic politics, but apparently she was hand-picked rather than voted on? Of course, this does make the Social Democratic Alliance Party seem more progressive, but I wonder if rank-and-file voters in Iceland who have voted for an openly gay woman.

Icelanders don't care what anyone does behind closed doors. Most couples never even bother to marry. Women culturally rule daily life and are readily acepted into roles that we consider masculine. Genealogy is not based on the last name of the husband. Children are named after the father, but they take the first name or the father and add "-son" if it's a boy and "-dottir" if it's a girl, so the people there usually have different names from their siblings and parents. No one tells a woman what to do in Iceland.
If you're a guy in a bar, you are more likely to be picked up by a woman than the other way around. They are not impressed with lies and bull***** and especially don't care if you're an American. Most Icelandic women are absurdly good-looking and many are just smoking goddam hot. It's a truly wonderful country.

If I had known all that I would have gotten out of Cambridge years ago, I lucked out though, I married a Danish girl she has three sisters, the whole family looked like Movie Stars, even the mother.

I was there for 5 days a few years ago on a stopover to Norway. I really liked it. The people were great. It was freaking expensive, though. And we could learn from their immigration policy.
