Default 30 years ago Jim Jones and Jonestown..

Remember the horror of Jonestown and the koolaid.. this week is the 3oth anniversary.. it was a truly horrific event..

10 days that shook S.F.

Quote:
On Nov. 18, 1978, more than 900 men, women and children - many of them poor African Americans from San Francisco - died after drinking a cyanide-laced potion in Peoples Temple founder Jim Jones' compound in the jungles of Guyana.
Just a reminder of the characteristics of a cult..

Marcia Rudin's 14 Common Characteristics of a Cult

Quote:
1. Members swear total allegiance to an all-powerful leader who they believe to be the Messiah.
2. Rational thought is discouraged or forbidden.
7. Cults exist only for their own material survival and make false promises to work to improve society.
8. Cult members often work fulltime for the group for little or no pay
11. Cults are apocalyptic and believe themselves to be the remnant who will survive the soon-approaching end of the world.
12. Many cults follow an "ends justify the means" philosophy.
13. Cults, particularly in regard to their finances, are shrouded in secrecy.
Gotta watch out for those cults and their members..

I was watching that show last night. I never knew they practiced drinking the suicide punch. Also ... I never knew he rambled on the PA system almost nonstop ... what a living hell that place was. Those close to him saw it all coming as he was hooked on drugs ... a rather sad story of the vunerable being used and abused.
