Its about time because there are millions upon millions of people in this country that revel in their ignorance like its some badge of honor. If it weren't for the educated in this country that have brought it to the fore front of the development of new technology the U.S. would be an agrarian society with a low standard of living and very little power. Just for starters. Maybe with the election of BO we can change this misguided notion that ignorance is a good trait.
Barack Obama’s election is a milestone in more than his pigmentation. The second most remarkable thing about his election is that American voters have just picked a president who is an open, out-of-the-closet, practicing intellectual.
Maybe, just maybe, the result will be a step away from the anti-intellectualism that has long been a strain in American life. Smart and educated leadership is no panacea, but we’ve seen recently that the converse — a White House that scorns expertise and shrugs at nuance — doesn’t get very far either.
We can’t solve our educational challenges when, according to polls, Americans are approximately as likely to believe in flying saucers as in evolution, and when one-fifth of Americans believe that the sun orbits the Earth.
Almost half of young Americans said in a 2006 poll that it was not necessary to know the locations of countries where important news was made. That must be a relief to Sarah Palin, who, according to Fox News, didn’t realize that Africa was a continent rather than a country.
Perhaps John Kennedy was the last president who was unapologetic about his intellect and about luring the best minds to his cabinet. More recently, we’ve had some smart and well-educated presidents who scrambled to hide it. Richard Nixon was a self-loathing intellectual, and Bill Clinton camouflaged a fulgent brain behind folksy Arkansas aphorisms about hogs.
As for President Bush, he adopted anti-intellectualism as administration policy, repeatedly rejecting expertise (from Middle East experts, climate scientists and reproductive health specialists). Mr. Bush is smart in the sense of remembering facts and faces, yet I can’t think of anybody I’ve ever interviewed who appeared so uninterested in ideas.........con.

I can understand why everyone hates the smartest kid in the class. You'd think they'd get over it though, when its time to pick the President.
Because of this notion that dumb is good, were falling behind. Two years ago the U.S. graduated 10,000 engineers in all fields from what i can remember. In india alone 80,000 graduated. We can't keep this up or we WILL eventually be a second rate power.

You must mean militarily.
We already are a second rate power in regard to education, preventable deaths, infant mortality, literacy, and lifespan.
The MTV Crowd elected the President (stupid bastards)
Where would smart rich bastards be without a$s holes like me working for them, they're to smart to drive trucks so if the intelligent brilliant saps wanted something and I wasn't there with my little truck the Brain Surgeon would have to go and get whatever it was he wanted himself, or send his stupid wife------Imagine what a nut house we would live in if everybody was smart-------

A reflection of the last 25 years of this idea, or policy i've read that as recently as yesterday. Read that It started with the Reagon Adm. cutting funding for education. He pledged to cut taxes and the pork,so an easy target was education let the states handle that along with everything else.

We don't need everyone to be smart, Harry. No one is threatening you or your "little truck"......or your cigarettes......or lotto tickets......or booze.
We're just glad to be getting a President who has a brain.

Great post, Flex. One thing I'd add to this discussion is that intellect means little without wisdom and discernment. I hope, and believe, that Obama understands this. Reagan didn't have the intellect but he did have some wisdom and mediocre discernment. Clinton had excellent intellect and some wisdom but poor discernment. George W. brought nothing to the table. Obama shows a lot of promise and seems to have vision, I pray that he delivers.
