We already are a second rate power in regard to education, preventable deaths, infant mortality, literacy, and lifespan.
I find it hard to beat up on the US in comparison to other countries. I am not sure how we can do better in education and literacy. I think every American has a great chance to get educated. Do they have better teaching techniques elsewhere? I don't think it's the teacher or the technique, I think it's the students. We don't promote education anymore instead we promote Clothes, Cars, Money, Violence, Credit Cards. Our kids don't want to learn anymore and our society gives them the ability not to. We can't force them to learn.
On a side note, my father-in-law is in charge of hiring employees from India for his company. He is in the tech field. He told me that it normally will take 2-3 Indian workers to do what one American can do. He says that they are very technically sound workers and can finish tasks fine but they are terrrible at problem solving. Small case but whatever.
Lifespan is linked directly to obesity I think. We are by far the fattest pigs on the planet.
Finally, check out this map. This is of course before oil plummeted back to 60 per barrel and before the economic crisis. We all know most countries around the world are being hit harder than we are and now their currencies have devalued against the dollar. You could probably add in about 20-30 more countries since this crisis began.
U.S. $15.78 trillion
China $ 2.75 trillion
India $ 1.07 trillion
US lost $433 billion on 1/17/08
US gained $487 billion on 3/11/08
US lost $3.301 trillion in market cap
between Oct. 9, 2007 and Jan. 22, 2008.
These numbers are current as of 6/25/08. We basically shat out India and China in about 3 months. These numbers are all much lower now. Don't worry 80,000 engineers isn't gonna put India or anyone ahead of us any time soon.

As long as we still watch 'fear factor, bachelor, survivor, etc....' on TV, we are not going any where.
Barack Obama’s election is a milestone in more than his pigmentation. The second most remarkable thing about his election is that American voters have just picked a president who is an open, out-of-the-closet, practicing intellectual.
